Hi Brian and Sheila, and welcome.  As I just wrote to Jon Howard, I've lived in this neighborhood for ten years.  Over that time period, two cars (on one night) and one apartment (on another afternoon) have been broken into on our block.

That's a pretty good batting average.  I'm sorry to hear of your recent loss, Sheila, but am glad to hear your home was untouched.

We have respectable lawn furniture on our front porch.  Then again, my husband locks up his bike right next to it.

And while we have a burglar alarm, we know people in the neighborhood who not only leave their doors unlocked, but encourage friends to walk in unannounced.  However, I think John's plan is a good one, and hopefully will result in better management of the predominantly petty crime in the neighborhood.

  My wife and I have lived over on Tenth Street for about a year.  I am originally from a small town in MA and she is from a small village in England.  Neither one of us considers ourselves "city people", but we do love the Summit area.  I really don't like this recent criminal activity that is being discussed.  I do like the fact that the community is talking about it though.  I commend all of you active neighbors.  Let me share a brief comment from my wife from this past weekend.  We were walking through some of the neighborhoods and she said, "You know one of the things I love about American neighborhoods is that people have things like pots and plants and chairs on their porches".  "You never see that in England".  "They would get stolen or destroyed".  So we had that conversation for a few minutes and the conclusion seemed to be not that England is full of criminal activity, but that the communities are very tight and populated, even congested, and on any given night some persons coming back from the pub will swipe a pot or a solar lamp or whatever, and ultimately nobody really puts things out in front of their houses.  So I agree.  It's nice that we beutify our neighborhoods and that it's mostly respected.  As usual, a few bad apples try to ruin things, but it is my hope that it will mostly remain a nuisance more than anything else.

We moved about 1 year ago to 6th St. behind the hospital and have not regreted that decision yet. About 2-3 weeks ago, 2 homes were broken into in this small street, my son'd car was vandalized, but our home was thankfully spared. The mood changed in our home. My relaxed husband locks doors now and we are all a bit more paranoid. I wish I had better news!
