[Summit] Another break-in

Dear neighbors,

  I think it is very important to stay alert and keep an eye with over one another's properties.  Being kind enough to call the police whenever we see suspicious activity in our neighbors' homes and keep the outside of our homes well lit.

  However, without minimizing the importance of having the police act on these incidents, I think we need to be more aware that our homes are in a growing city and, to make things worse, our homes are in the kind of neighborhood that any thieves worth their salt would want to "do business" in.  Therefore, we need to become more careful and keep our homes locked and consider installing alarms.  It is not pleasant, but it's far more effective than simply crying over long-gone times when this wasn't necessary.  Also, I would like to recommend that we don't become overly sensitive and lose our sense of safety.  These break ins have been issolated incidents and we shouldn't let those people take away our tranquility.  Summit is still a great place to live and as long as we implement cautionary measures and commit to being good neighbors, its should stay that way.

be quickly hidden in a garage - but they 
could also have been much further away
before officers could head for the scene).

You are assuming that there are patrols. I live on of the main roads within 
Summit and I don't see patrols. I do occasionally see police cars race by 
with the officer chatting on their cell phone. Less frequently, I see them 
race by with lights...

I had replied about the break-in before and my point revolved around 
accountability. When our house was broken into a few years ago we actually 
had the officer in our driveway when we got a call from our credit card 
company asking about unusual actively -- the card was being used at the gas 
station around the corner as we spoke! We could not get the police to 
pursue the 'lead' This was a string of break-in's that lasted for months 
and nothing was done. It was blamed on kids.

We need the police to be visible. It discourages 'kids' from doing dumb 
thinks.
