If we open the streets to overnight parking, property speculators will turn Summit into a satellite neighborhood for Brown, RISD and J&W. ... Trust me, you don't want a house full of college students living next door to you.
I totally agree with Paul. We lived for 9 years on College Hill near a number of rental properties, and it was very disruptive to family life. (Our kids were young then.) We had drunken RISD and Brown students do things like pee on my front flower gardens, steal chairs from our porch, smash flower pots from my front steps in the street in the middle of the night, turn on our outdoor water tap and let it run all night while we were asleep, and of course make noise like you wouldn't believe, well after a normal family bedtime (say, 11 pm on).
One or two such drunken mischievous incidents are maybe worth an indulgent shrug, but season after season, accompanied by the paving-over of lawns and constant clutter of cars in the streets day and night, you get burned out.
So, we've been happy living farther from the campuses. The renters in our neighborhood tend to be medical residents and young professionals -- quiet, good neighbors. I am absolutely sure that Paul is correct -- street parking means eventually packing apartments with younger students, each with his/her own car and none of the rise-and-shine schedules that are compatible with working folks and their families.
Be careful what you wish for, in terms of parking! :-)
