This has obviously raised the temperature of discussion in this board.  Speaking personally, when I moved to Providence about 5 years ago, I only learned about the parking ordinance about 10 minutes after I arrived to move into my apartment and was very confused about why the city would need such a rule.  Those who support the ordinance for livability reasons should know that cities that are recognized for their livability such as San Francisco and Portland, Oregon (to name a couple) have no overnight parking ban.  Their positive contributors to a high level of sustainability are good public transit, smart land use, innovation, and the quality of city services, some areas where Providence could certainly use some improvement.

There is no simple solution to the problem of having too many cars for the capacity of off-street parking at a property.  Obviously, the city needs to better enforce the ordinances in this and other areas (e.g. sidewalk shoveling).  We also need a city wide comprehensive plan that manages growth wisely so that people have jobs, shopping, and other services close to their residences so they don't need a car, allowing multi-family housing to accommodate more people sustainably.

Hopefully, the results of this and other discussions within our association will lead to a better city and neighborhood.

As a footnote, has anybody ever wondered why there are no signs which say no overnight on-street parking?  More parking ticket revenue from those unsuspecting violators, perhaps (ha ha...just kidding...sort of)?
