[Summit] Tonight's meeting; traffic concern

I think that is a great idea.  I realize the police can't spend all their
time ticketing, but if there is a pattern of strict enforcement at a
particular location (such as 4th and Hope) the word gets out and maybe the
merchant will post a sign to let people know the risk.

On the other hand, those of us who live in the neighborhood can also make
the turn a block sooner; I know that corner, and I just don't go that way.

Liberty, I'm sorry to hear of your accident. That corner is certainly
unsafe, with people routinely parked illegally outside the bank. Although
tonight's meeting is specifically on the topic of long range neighborhood
planning, I do think this is something that should be taken up with
Traffic/Public Works/Police soon. 

I've posted a request for  <http://sna.providence.ri.us/blog/?p=99> traffic
hotspots on the blog, places where bad parking and traffic karma ensue - due
to poor signage, street marking, bad behavior, or chance. Please comment on
the blog post if you have a hotspot to point out ! If a pattern appears, we
can support a helpful neighbor in addressing it with the City.

of  Fourth Street & Hope.

a right turn off Hope Street onto Fourth, coming from Pawtucket,
and there was a large 4X4 Dodge Dakota  SUV parked close
to the corner next to Seven Stars Bakery.  In fact, besides being
too close to the corner, the vehicle was blocking the driveway 
on the Fourth Street side.

I was forced to swing wide around the Dakota to turn into Fourth,
and could not see around it, so wound up running into a car
coming down Fourth  on the other side of the street. 

Those who live in this area know that people are always
parking near this corner while going into the bank or
Seven Stars (despite the latter's parking lot).  So, it is
an ongoing dangerous situation.

The policeman who came to take a report ticketed
the Dakota - but if the street near the corner was
clearly marked NO PARKING or NO PARKING TO
CORNER, it wouldn't have been blocking my turn
and my sightlines in the first place. 

Could someone please mention this to Mayor
Cicilline at the meeting tonight?   I actually
happened to see him when I went to get a
copy of the police report today, and briefly told
him about the problem, but if others tell him as 
well, action is more likely.

And, after all, it could have been one of you
trying to turn that corner...

The meeting tomorrow on neighborhood plans is something Summit Neighborhood
Association has been working and waiting for since at least 2002. The

Comprehensive Plan and were among the Mayor's earliest initiatives,
although events have delayed them for several years. These plans should ask 
and answer important questions about the future of each neighborhood and
invite the people living in those places today to be important participants
in their creation.

The Mayor has responded by inviting neighborhood organizations to a meeting 
tomorrow, Tuesday, May 30, at the Public Safety Complex auditorium (the new
police station overlooking Rt. 95) at 6:30. Summit Neighborhood Association
would like all interested neighbors to join us at this meeting to learn how 
the city intends to conduct this important process.

2. East Side Public Education Coalition PUBLIC MEETING JUNE 1st

The ESPEC steering committee invites you to a public meeting on Thursday,
June 1st, from 6:30-8:00pm in the basement of the Rochambeau branch of the 
Providence Public Library.  The goals of the meeting are:

a)To review the continuing loss of East Side public education, and present
information about ESPEC's steering committee's efforts to date.

b)To hear from you about what you want for the future of Nathan Bishop and 
East Side public education.

c)To share ideas about what we as a community can do to restore East Side
public education, and involve more people in activities.
