[Summit] Speaking of animals & mice advice needed

MORE ANIMAL SITINGS: I think there is a coyote living somewhere very near
the intersection of Rochambeau & Lorimer as I frequently see one in that
area. I have noticed that at night fresh road kill in that area always
disappears quickly, although I suppose that could also be raccoons.
In the ten years I have lived here, in my own yard, living right on Hope
St., I have seen unusual colored mice, squirrels, possums, raccoons and
skunks, including one almost entirely white albino skunk.
I saw ring tailed fox (smaller & proportionally shorter legs) on Vassar
(day) and in the Brown Stadium parking lot (night)
I saw a larger (red?) fox behind the Rabbinical College near Blackstone
Blvd. (day)
I have also found salamanders in my yard. I hadn't seen any of those for
years!
And we have an amazing array of birds come to our bird feeder. & I've seen
hawks down by Shaws.
MICE ADVICE NEEDED: I like nature, but this past year TWICE we have had mice
make nests in our cars. The first one built a nest in my dashboard, which
blocked the fan & defrost. I couldn't get it out myself. That was
expensive; you can't live without the defrost option.
The second one recently moved into the air intake of our other car. The
smell of it's stash of seeds & nuts burning in the crevices of our engine
sent us to the garage to spend more money- trying to locate the source of
the burning coffee odor.
We don't have a garage. I am allergic to mothballs and don't want to use
poison since I park next to my organic pepper pots. I will clean up all the
maple noses and acorns nearby. Any other advice to discourage the mice
and/or squirrels???
Happy New Year
