Another tip:

email chain letters that request you to send to '10 or so of your friends' AND copy the last person back on the mail are actually scamming you out of a list of your friends and family.

One recent one sent to me claimed to be a science project - see below.
Within 12 hours my Spam box intake increased by 10 fold.  This one was particularly clever in that it also got you to put first names in giving them a higher potential of looking legitimate.

Also, remember that your financial institutions or shopping sites should NEVER ask you to click on a link for confirmation of an email unless you initiated the action (changing your password, for instance, or first time registration).  If you have recieved these types of email, most financial sites have a link for reporting the phishing expeditions.  Most of the emails imply the need for immediate action - don't panic - CALL instead to talk to customer service.


EXAMPLE of PHISHING email.  DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!!!!

Copy and paste this entire letter into a new e-mail
(PLEASE do NOT hit FORWARD), then read the list of
names below. If your name is on the list put a
STAR * next to it. If not, then add your name (in
alphabetical order), and DO NOT put in a star.
Send it to ten people and send it back to the person
who sent it to you. Put your name in the subject
box! You'll see what happens...It's kind of
cool! Please keep this going. Don't mess it up,
please.
