Excuse my naievety ...
What was the responsibility of the committee?
What is currently in place to carry out those responsibilities.  Does the mayor have a committee that he oversees?

Subject: [Summit] Elected School Committee?

While we're debating changing the City Council, what do we think
about the idea being floated to elect the School Committee?

A bit of background: Providence had an elected School Committee until
about 1970, when then-Mayor Joe Doorley argued successfully that the
School Committee had no responsibility for taxes and if the Mayor was
going to be responsible for raising the money he ought to have
authority over the system.
