Just to clarify, Monica's statement below is accurate in every way. In attempting to keep my e-mail brief, I didn't mean by any stretch to imply that the new route is only being implemented for Miriam's benefit. Thanks, Monica.

Dear neighbors,
I attended the SNA meeting on Monday night regarding RIPTA and want to be sure that everyone knows that the intention of the expanded bus route is for the benefit of the whole neighborhood, not just The Miriam Hospital.
Representatives from RIPTA conveyed to us that this is a good "market" for them due to possible ridership from the general neighborhood. According to RIPTA representatives, several years ago, RIPTA attempted to bring buses through Summit, and were unable to build concensus.
When I heard of the plan, I arranged a meeting between RIPTA and several key internal colleagues to discuss the possibility of increasing bus usage with our employees. RIPTA had a very clear opinion on where the route should go. One of the key things discussed was getting neighborhood opinion before deciding on bringing the route through the neighborhood. I encouraged RIPTA to talk to neighbors. RIPTA informed us that they were directed by several city officials to speak to the Summit Neighborhood Association, and they have accomplished this nicely.
I want to thank SNA, and especially Jesse for his efforts to inform and illicit feedback from neighbors on this topic. The survey on the blog and the information posted there are very useful.
As always, if any neighbor wishes to speak to me, please call The Neighborhood Hotline at (401)-793-4040.
Sincerely,
Monica Anderson
Sincerely,
Monica Anderson

Representatives of RIPTA attended SNA's Board meeting on Monday to present a revised route for the 49 bus (Camp Street - Miriam Hospital) that will debut on 1/18. These changes were intended to benefit hospital employees, patients, and visitors while minimizing the impact on neighborhood residents. SNA has not taken a position on the new route, but we encourage neighbors to share their feedback with RIPTA directly.
Please visit www.summitneighbors.org to look at a map of the revised route.

Monica, speaking only for myself, I want to thank you for your e-mail. You have an informed opinion based on experience, and it's valuable.
My take on the previous messages is that neighbors ask a great deal of each other, whether it's the guy down the street needing to shovel his walk or the City needing to restore a neglected fountain. Because of Miriam's prominence, expectations are high, and I believe rightfully so. But I think it's also true that neighbors are ready to help: forming brigades to help senior citizens shovel snow, writing grants to help raise funds, and working with Miriam in any way that we can.
Monica, I agree with you that revitalizing North Main may take some time, but I don't believe a committed consortium of groups is a prerequisite for change. Let me give an example, and to be fair, let me choose one within Miriam instead of a North Main one. On Monday, you told us that the hospital has formed a committee with dozens of members who are devoted to making Miriam greener -- very exciting! Imagine if they decided that simultaneous to working on a massive institutional plan, they'd take the small step of eliminating plastic cups from break rooms and asking people to re-use ceramic mugs.
Change flows down from large-scale efforts that are complex and require coordination, but it can also bubble up from the isolated action of a single concerned citizen.
Best wishes,
Jesse
