>From the Summit Neighborhood Association:
There has been a lot of discussion and activity surrounding Lippitt Park on
this listserv and in other forums. We want our neighbors and members of the
Association to know that we have been working hard to follow through on what
we are hearing from you and to do our part in getting the best possible
outcome for the neighborhood. The mission of the SNA is to advocate for the
neighborhood. Our job is to listen to what our neighbors want and to work
with them toward those goals.
We think it is important to reiterate to the neighborhood that SNA has not
advocated for the removal of a single tree. For our part in this project,
we raised awareness of the possibility of fountain restoration and we guided
money to the people with authority to make it happen. The plan came down to
us from the Parks Department in the same way it came down to every other
citizen. They told us what the plan was, with little or no opportunity to
adjust the plan ourselves. We too expressed concern for these trees, and we
were given a list of reasons why the trees had to be removed. We did defer
to the experts in the room, feeling as though due diligence had been done on
the matter.
Like many of our neighbors, some of us saw the aftermath of the removed
trees to appear barren and sad. Many of us made calls the following day,
alongside many of you, to express our concern. In the past week, we have
put the Parks Department to task in explaining the reason for each
individual tree's removal. We hope that the plans presented by the Parks
Department at the meeting will reflect this work. They are receptive to the
matter and, as you know, they will hold the meeting in the Park tomorrow,
Wednesday, June 30th at 5pm.
We do not think that this will jeopardize the fountain's restoration. They
have already removed too many trees. We have advocated to ensure that the
budget is there to replace all the trees that have been removed with new
ones.
We hope to see you down at the Park tomorrow. A show of support on this
issue will help ensure that the neighbors¹ concerns translate into the
reality of the project.
And as always, this is your neighborhood association. Please feel free to
email us any time at sna at sna.providence.ri.us
<mailto:sna at sna.providence.ri.us> , or visit our monthly Board meetings
held at Summit Commons. The next two are July 15 and August 19, both at
7pm.
