[Summit] Lift the overnight parking ban?

Density of cars is not controllable, really.  Most houses in our neighborhood are two-family, with as many as four cars, and even the one-family dwellings have two cars.
Put even half of all these on the street, and it is crowded!  The alternate side thing is a nightmare, as described.  I had to do that years ago, living in NYC.  Even though we obviously are not such a densely populate area - we could be as bad or worse - because only very few people in NYC own cars.  In any case, alternate side parking requires the constant moving of cars, thus an extra chore every night, and more traffic.

I think the present system, while surely not ideal, works pretty well.  I think the SNA should put its energy and efforts into pressuring the police department to require a fair and user-friendly way to accommodate overnight visitor parking for residents.  That seems to be the most serious concern expressed here.  Also, there might be partial exemptions for people who just don't have off-street space.

Blessings,

Liberty G

I lived that way in Pawtucket.  If the density of on street parked cars is too high, that becomes an issue.  I lived in Oak Hill where it was not an issue.  Most people could easily park in front of their house and there wasn't high parking space contention.

You bring up a good point though, the minute you lift the ban tennants at houses with tandem drives will be pushed out onto the street and those in single families with tandem drives will put the second car on the street.  Add a little illegal subdividing and multie roommate rentals and it could get pretty crowded out there.  It's never easy and again, enforcement would be critical.  Enforcement of zoning and whatever parking regulations go along with the change.  Even then, some won't like it.

Sorry folks but I would be EXTREMELY sorry to see the parking ban lifted, even though it has been occasionally inconvenient.

For one thing- the lack of cars on the street give the neighnborhood a different feel.

But the important part is being forced to park on street is a MISERY.  And landlords seldom provide tenants with anything they don't have to....

I lived with having to park on-street for years and it was AWFUL; and at this point I would not have the energy to deal with it.
Alternate side of the street parking just ADDS to the annoyance.

Coming home late at night, when less spaces were available, and having to walk blocks. Having to shovel over and over to park is very miserable. This is New England  it snows a lot.   And on narrow streets when you are trying to shovel IN, where do you put our car till you're done shoveling? You can't just stop and block traffic. Once I stuck the car on the corner while I did it (yup, causing blind turns), and while retrieving my car from the corner  where I had to rock my way out of the plowed up mess, someone came and tried to take the space. (By then I was so exhausted and agitated they took one look at my furious expression and fled) I definitely staked my parking space if I thought it work, but often I couldn't.

And why would someone want to prevent anyone from staking out a parking place that they shoveled out?

Has any one wanting to lift the ban ever lived that way??   It was upsetting when I was young and healthy.  What would I do now?

Do you think lifting the ban on overnight parking in Providence is a good idea?
