[Summit] Spring Improvement Projects at The Miriam Hospital

Dear Neighbors,

Spring is here, and we have started one of several exciting projects aimed at improving landscaping around the hospital.  Currently underway are the Resurfacing and Landscaping Improvement Projects of Parking Lots B and C.  Slated to last approximately 6-8 weeks, the work includes a major landscaping overhaul using native and sustainable planting materials.  Trees within the lots and along the external perimeters, coupled with special lighting designed to minimize light trespassing are planned for installation.  Future projects include landscaping improvements near The Fain Building in partnership with Groundwork Providence and The Groden Center.  These projects will commence in the late spring and early summer months and will be discussed at our upcoming Landscaping Forum Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 4 at 6:00 p.m. in the Hurvitz 2 Conference Room.

The Miriam is embarking on an ongoing journey toward increased sustainability, with many more efforts underway.  If you are interested in learning more about this work, I invite you to attend our Community Environmental Forum Meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the Hurvitz 1 Conference Room. All are welcome to attend.

Also, please join The "Green Champions" of The Miriam Hospital as we present our second "Miriam Earth Day Celebration".  The event will be held on Thursday, April 28th from 11:30-3:30 in the main lobby of the hospital building.  Max Man from RI Resource Recovery will be holding "Recycling 101" workshops during lunch time (between 12pm-1:30pm), local non profits will have informational booths, and our internal Green Champions will be undertaking several exciting projects including a battery recycling table.

The traffic/noise, late nights and nearby day care do strike me as major
factors.

Having said that, what would be the effect of building a coffee shop sans
drive thru? Is this option even on the table?

Further down Hope Street, Seven Stars bakery does get busy, for sure, but it
adds buzz to the neighborhood (there's obviously a reason why this was
chosen for a scene in the movie "Dan in Real Life") and the foot traffic it
generates is no doubt a boon for local retailers. We live on Eighth street,
just up from Chez Pascal and Cook & Brown restaurants, as well as the weekly
summer farmers' market and art/craft sale, and while the traffic and parked
cars spike Thursday-Saturday, these are not open-all-day places like what's
being proposed for the coffee shop.

(I wonder if the city would now be more likely to relent on some of the
zoning issues, given that a new place of business would generate some jobs
and tax revenues. Hmm.)

Brewed awakenings was not buying the property ACERI (sp?) was and leasing it back to them. They repeatedly said that the drive thru and business scale was required for the bank financing so any other alternative suggested was not viable.

There are other business people here, who would love to look at the location
for a Cafe & Garden center concept.

If I was to look at the facility I would use a business model allowing
residents to use the greenhouses and including farmers like Red Planet Farms
who have several small farm lots within Providence.
I would open it as a cafe & coffee shop, food emporium and garden
center where you can get a light lunch as well as a selection of garden
tools, and people would not have to give up on Holiday pies as we do make
pies every year with local ingredients.

If the bulk of the cooking is done at my current commissary then the
business would not be needing a big variance on the current zoning, provided
the building is structurally sound.

I also believe that I could generate support from the community on such a
project and develop a business that is a real asset to the neighborhood.

It is possible to have the plus side of a successful business that people
enjoy without the downside of drive through traffic.
