[Summit] Hurricane Sandy Relief

A heads up: relief centers in NYC seem to have more supplies at this point than they can distribute. I've heard and read reports of people with vehicles full of donations being turned away. Michael Bloomberg, our Mayor, is asking everyone to make monetary donations instead: “At this point these centers have more than they can really realistically distribute,” the mayor said. “If we need more, we can certainly put out another call for help, but what would be the most helpful is donations to the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York, and then we’ll be able to use that money to help people get back on their feet.” This is from the NY Times today. So unless you have a rendezvous planned in a specific neighborhood with specific people, it might be best to help the Mayor's fund. This might help pay the rent on an apartment for a homeless family, for example, or for a new boiler for someone's house or replacement books for a schoolchild. Just sayin'..
I was turned away myself when I went to donate stuff after 9/11. I'd hate for anyone to make the kind of generous and heroic effort the good folks at Frog and Toad are pulling together, just to be told it's no longer needed. But perhaps they have people waiting for them. Best to ask.
