[Summit] Recycling - & Choosing Food Containers

Neighbors,

The info from Gayle Gifford is very
useful re: recycling. However, you
should check those symbols on the
bottom of containers for a different
reason. Some plastics are more toxic
than others and you should avoid food
packaged in those.

It's actually best to avoid plastic
altogether as much as possible. Even
kids' toys may have plasticizers used
which can cause harm if chewed on!
Also, canned goods are bad. They are
usually lined with Bisphenol-A, an
estrogen mimicker. And, when they
replace BPA, they often substitute
BPS, which is even more toxic. Glass
jars and bottles are the safest and
healthiest food containers - and
can be re-used for storage at home.

Anyway, here is the scoop on which
plastics you definitely should avoid:

CHECK OUT RECYCLING SYMBOLS:
On the bottom of plastic items is a triangle with
a number indicating type & toxicity of the plastic.

DON’T BUY PLASTIC WITH RECYCLING NUMBERS 3, 6 OR 7.
NUMBERS 1, 2, 4 & 5 are considered less hazardous.

DO BUY TOYS & CHILDREN’S PRODUCTS WITH THE SYMBOL,
“CE” ON THE BOX OR ITEM. These comply with tougher
European Union standards restricting phthalates
& other chemicals.

Blessings,

Liberty G
