For everyone's information--we had a similar encounter at our home on Fourth St. today.  Followed up with the police too--simply to play it safe.  The police response was fast and courteous.  An officer came by and gathered information.....

The same officer stopped by our home later this evening--about an hour ago--and said they found and talked with this individual, ran a check on him (and the company he works for) and all checked out as legitimate. (He was promoting some sort of "alternative" to the National Grid).

The good news is that the police are taking the time and making the effort to follow-up--even to come back and report what they found.  A very thoughtful and professional gesture--this is heartening.  The unfortunate  news is that this man really was not trained well, nor had the awareness or sensitivity to know how to go door to door and present himself, his credentials and the company's service he was selling.  It was a set-up for miscommunication and misunderstanding....

But all is well that ends well.
