Route Evaluations give riders a chance to see comments and ideas about their
favorite bus routes

RIPTA's Comprehensive Operational Analysis

vHIk7gMg> (COA) -- which we reported on last October -- has reached its
next phase.

RIPTA has begun posting detailed Route Evaluations, intended to identify
where the system is performing well and where changes might be desired or
possible. You can view the current Route Evaluations here

Evaluations are being posted as they are ready, so if you don't see your
route, keep checking. Evaluations for each of RIPTA's 58 bus routes and 8
Flex routes will be posted in a few weeks.

Potential route changes and actions may include:

* Reducing the time it takes to travel between key locations.
* Offering more frequent service on high ridership routes.
* Improving travel connections.
* Introducing new transit services to serve key locations.
* Making services easy to use.

Public input sought
As the project moves into the final phase, public outreach activities are
scheduled to begin this month. RIPTA will evaluate the impact of these new
route scenarios in terms of ridership, cost and other considerations to ask
the public to share their opinions.

During the week of February 11, teams of two staff members each will be out
at some 20-30 key, high-ridership locations along the RIPTA system to talk
with riders. The following week public comments to date will be incorporated
into RIPTA staff recommendations for public review at community meetings
during the last week of February. The plan is to come up with two or more
scenarios per route.

Seven Community Meetings have been planned between Monday, Feb. 25 and
Wednesday, March 6.

After any further changes from public input at meetings, RIPTA staff
recommendations are expected to go to the RIPTA Board at its March 18, 2013
meeting.

CTC encourages CTC members and RIPTA riders to attend a RIPTA community
meeting near you to review and comment on these proposed changes. You can
also join the COA email list at COA at RIPTA.com to follow the COA process,
proposals and decisions.

RIPTA launched the COA in May of 2012. The analysis has already completed
data collection, market reviews, and stakeholder interviews. Additionally,
RIPTA collected over 10,000 surveys last Fall by talking to riders
one-on-one on every route of the system at bus stops and during their rides.

The COA will help RIPTA identify its strengths and weaknesses, understand
local travel needs, what type of services riders desire, and opportunities
to create a better transit network.

About the Coalition for Transportation Choices
The Coalition for Transportation Choices (CTC) calls for a 21st century
transportation system that enhances our economy and provides all Rhode
Islanders with healthy transportation choices.

Rhode Island's 21st century transportation system must provide all people -
employees, tourists, youth, elderly, able and disabled - with safe and
dependable access to their community's opportunities for work, education,
services, and recreation. The system should be considerably less dependent
on cars and fossil fuels as well as efficient, effective and easy to use. It
should minimize impacts to land, water and air and improve the health and
well-being of all Rhode Islanders. Such a system should be sustained with
predictable and consistent funding for operation and future growth.
CTC's work has enjoyed the support of
the Rhode Island Foundation,
The Prospect Hill Foundation, and
Third Sector New England's Capacity Building Fund.
