[Summit] Water Heater Recommendation (Peter Sandby-Thomas)

Word to the wise:  we had a Bosch tankless water heater installed and had so much trouble with it that we eventually had it removed and went back to the tank.  The on-demand system never worked properly.  It would cut out for no reason 2 minutes into a shower, and neither the installer nor the Bosch techs could figure out why.  Worse, at one point Bosch said it was a plumbing problem and required us to pay for $700 worth of needless repairs.  They have refused to reimburse us for that expense.

In theory, these things are great, and I'm sure they have worked well for others.  For us it was a disaster.  I will say that while I would never recommend Bosch products to anyone, the guy who installed it, Steve @ The Gas Doctor, was very responsive and responsible about trying to fix it and then making amends when it was clear it was never going to work.  If you have a gas system, he's great.

Hi All,

It looks like it might be time to replace the water heater in our home and
we are currently considering both the standard type and an on-demand
heater, particularly as National Grid are offering up to a $600 rebate on
the latter right now. As such, I am wondering if anyone in the neighborhood
has installed an on-demand water heater and, if so, how much did the heater
cost (roughly) and how its performance (any better or worse than the
standard heater?).

Any information will be much appreciated!
