Hi Abby,
Glad you are interested! In short, the project is dormant for the winter.
The Parks Dept should be picking it back up after the frost, and we hope
they do. The phase it will be in at that point is that we will have to
raise some money to make it happen. We have raised some so far, and we'll
have to raise some more, and the Parks Dept will go after some larger sums,
as well. This is an important project to them, too.
Once that happens and construction is underway, we'll organize some
volunteer days to do some leg work on the project. And once the project is
completed, the reins will have to be handed over to a newly-formed (not yet
formed) Summit Ave Park Community Garden Group. I expect that SNA will
help to form this group and assist in its beginnings, but we really need
that group to be autonomous and work on its own. SNA should not
micro-manage this garden.
We know that garden plots will be a hot commodity. We did a survey last
year and more people responded that they'd like a plot than there will be
available spots. Therefore, there needs to be a fair method in determining
who gets a plot. I expect that we will look to other community gardens for
methodology, and do what seems the most fair, whether that is a lottery or
first-come, first-served method.
The SNA already has a small committee in place for this project, and more
volunteers are of course welcome and wanted.
We will put this project on the agenda for our next monthly meeting, and
all those who have interest are cordially invited to come discuss and join
the committee. That meeting will be... say it with me... Monday, February
17, 7pm at Summit Commons, 99 Hillside.
Dean
