[Summit] A question on behalf of a friend

Bob, I lived for several years in the Olney/Doyle vicinity and walked or biked to the Providence station to commute to work in Boston. Apartments in the $600 range that are not shared are hard to come by, but a quick Craigslist search shows a couple of <$700 apartments within a 15 minute walk of the station, or a 5 minute bike ride. Whole Foods and Stop and Shop are both within reasonable distances of that neighborhood. It's also nice to board the train in Providence, before it fills and seating is harder to come by. Hope that's helpful. Ethan GylesHillside Ave.

Subject: [Summit] A question on behalf of a friend

A friend of ours is looking for a small apartment (studio is fine, but nothing with shared kitchen or bathroom space) to rent, beginning this summer.  It should be somewhere within a few miles of any one of the stations on the Providence-Boston MBTA commuter rail.  Does anyone know enough about the neighborhoods around any of those stations to recommend one of them to her?

Her top rent would be about $600, not including any utilities.  For the most part she plans to be working from home, for an employer in Boston, so a reliable on-line connection is essential, as are in-building laundry and a bathroom with a tub.  She has no car, and so does not need parking. She is a strong walker, and will do her routine shopping on foot, so there should be some basic stores in the vicinity. The neighborhood should be relatively low-crime, but she doesn't care much about socialization, entertainment/amenities (she goes elsewhere for nightlife) or schools. She does not have, and does not intend ever to have, a car, pets, roommates or apartment mates, or a live-in partner, so that wouldn't be a concern for her landlord.

So where would be a good place for her to begin looking?  Any advice would be welcome.

Bob M
