[Summit] Regarding Your PublicStuff Request #2956432

Hi folks, I’m responding in my dual capacity as Hope Street Merchant AND long time Summit resident and member of the SNA.

I’ve brought this thread to the attention of our Merchant’s Assoc. President and we are looking into this. I will say that merchants come and go on Hope Street as anywhere else and only a fraction of Hope Street businesses belong to the Merchant’s Association. So any agreement (at this point hypothetical) made with the city is something that current members are unaware of.

I can’t imagine though, how whoever was running the organization at the time the bus shelter went in could have undertaken such a responsibility. Being responsible for emptying a single trash can on a street filled with City receptacles would be an onerous and just plain odd responsibility.

I’d like to point out that the Hope Street Merchants work really hard to beautify and enhance the street. We contract with the local Grodon Center for plants and window cleaning. We had the current beautiful trash cans made by The Steel Yard at considerable expense, as well as bike racks and benches. We host community events and donate to so many local organizations.

I’m so sad that one of our neighbors takes some pleasure in — calling us out, as opposed to just having a dialog.

I can assure you that the vast majority of Merchants on Hope Street love the street and the area and we do our very best to contribute in a positive way. I’d like to further point out that we are individual business, we’re not a block, we are each responsible for the spaces we rent or own and the sidewalks in front. I personally (and I’m not speaking for anyone but myself), am several blocks from the trash can in question, and rarely walk by it (I walk to work from the other direction), so am unaware of what’s going on with it most of the time, and i just can’t imagine that it’s my responsibility to empty it. Having said that, I am someone who picks up trash when I see it and tries to have a positive impact on the neighborhood.

Very best regards,

k

I have been working on fulfilling the request that you submitted to our office regarding a trash bin that was left out. I wanted to inform you that the Environmental department has let us know that this issue cannot be resolved by their office. Unfortunately, this bin is not owned by the city. I was unable to view the photo you attached so we cannot make any further assessments as to who may be responsible for this bin.
