Although I don’t know the technical terms, this is in fact is not “internet chatter” as formatting code (HTML, XML, CSC etc.)

However, after similar frustrations myself, I found the following procedure cured this particular problem* reasonably well.

1. Visit this page

http://sna.providence.ri.us/mailman/listinfo/summit_sna.providence.ri.us

2. At the bottom of the page, under “Summit Subscribers”, enter your e-mail address in the bottom window (or letterbox) and press “Unsubscribe or edit options”

3. In the top part of the new page, “Summit list: member options for user ......”, enter your password and press “Log in”

4. The new page should read “Summit mailing list membership configuration for ...” Go to the last major section , “Your Summit Subscription Options”

5. Go to the third subsection, “Get MIME or Plain Text Digests?” and click ‘radio button’ on the right for ”MIME”. The button for “Plain Text” should simultaneously switch from full (blue dot) to empty (void).

* However, one problem that it doesn’t cure is whole Summit Digests answered with a simple “Reply” or “Reply All” command, without editing out the earlier messages that are irrelevant to the specific thread (topic) that the writer wants to comment on. 

This can result in whole Digests that are nearly impossible to navigate since every post mindessly recapitulates everything that was written before (lost cats, yesterday's weather, etc). Since Summit Digests include no headings or dividers between the individual messages, it becomes even harder to winnow out fresh comments and the specific points they were addressing.
