Swift Finish for Bag Ordinance. Last week, Mayor Elorza vetoed an ordinance put forth by the City Council to ban single-use plastic bags in retail establishments in Providence, reasoning that the legislation had moved through the Council too quickly to properly address equity issues. Read about the veto in the ProJo here, GoLocalProv here, in Councilman Sam Zurier's e-newsletter here, and in EcoRI News, here. Read about a state-level effort, here. Image credit here and here.

Neighbors Weighed in on Fane Proposal. This past winter, FPNA and other neighborhood groups invited neighbors to participate in a public opinion poll penned by the Jewelry District Association (JDA) on the so-called Fane proposal, the high-rise building proposed for I-195 land across the river. (If you took the poll, thank you!). On Tuesday, April 10, the JDA will share the results of the poll and hear from I-195 Commission Executive Director Peter McNally. All are invited to attend. Tuesday, April 10, 5pm. Learn more here, and see meeting listings, below.

Historic Preservation Fuels RI Economy. A recent report analyzes the historic preservation sector in our state, with a key finding: "Rhode Island welcomes 9.8 million heritage visitors annually, who add nearly $1.4 billion to the state’s economy." Read about it in EcoRI News here; see the report itself, here.

Power Lines Hearing Next Thursday. The neighborhood group Friends of India Point Park (FIPP) is currently appealing to the RI Supreme Court to overturn a decision by the RI Energy Facility Siting Board, a near-final step in a 16-year effort to bury the power lines in India Point Park. An important public hearing, originally scheduled for last month, has been moved to next Thursday, April 12 at 9:30am. Look for meeting details on Facebook here, watch recent video coverage in GoLocalProv here, find a recent write-up in PBN here (password), and learn background information on the FIPP site, here. To donate to the cause, click here. (Also, see meeting listings, below). Image, FIPP.

Will You Lead a Walk in Fox Point? Every spring, the walking festival Jane's Walk comes to Providence with free, citizen-led, interactive walks located all over the city (and elsewhere in the U.S. and in the world), inspired by the urban activist Jane Jacobs. Would you like to lead a walking tour in Fox Point on the weekend of May 4-6? Or do you have another tour idea in mind? Contact local coordinator Joelle Kanter at joellekanter at gmail.com. Learn more about the festival here (Facebook) and here (Eventbrite); find general information here. (Event also listed below).

Earth Day Cleanup and Sidewalk Sale: Save the Date! On the morning of Saturday, April 28, FPNA will hold its annual Earth Day cleanup at Fox Point location TBD. Later that day, the Wickenden Area Merchants Association will host the Makers & Merchants Sidewalk Sale on Wickenden Street from 11-5pm. Please join us for a day of fun in the neighborhood! Details to follow in this newsletter and on Facebook, here (FPNA) and here (WAMA).

A Gentle Reminder to Dog Walkers. A Fox Point neighbor recently reported to FPNA that certain grassy areas in Fox Point look like "a disgusting mess" now that the weather has warmed up. Dog walkers, would you please pick up after your dogs? Given that Mayor Elorza vetoed an ordinance to reduce single-use plastic bags, perhaps the extra bags will come in handy (learn about the veto, above). Image credit here and here. |
