Residents, Advocates Laud Mayoral Veto. Last Friday, Mayor Elorza vetoed a zoning change that would enable NY architect Jason Fane to build a 46-story tower on 195 land. While it is possible that the proposal will return to the City Council, a multitude of residents, developers, and advocacy organizations (including FPNA) have extolled the veto.
Discussion has been plentiful. See City Councilman Seth Yurdin's thorough discussion of the situation here. Read an advocacy update on the PPS site, here, and architect Dave Brussat's "Brave Veto" piece, here. See Dan McGowan's claim that the fate of the tower rests on one Councilwoman, here, see Councilman Sam Zurier's discussion, here (scroll to bottom), and read recent coverage on the tower's economic viability (or lack of it), here. Learn about a possible state-level response, here (WPRI) and here (GoLocalProv). Read an "idiotic" rebuke in the ProJo, here, and finally, read the Mayor's veto letter in full, here.
Free Parking on Wickenden and Ives. To incentivize local shopping during the holidays, Mayor Elorza recently announced two hours of free parking per day in designated commercial areas throughout the city, through January 1. The L-shaped area in Fox Point stretches from Wickenden Street at Benefit to Ives Street at Preston. Learn more here. |
