RIPTA Will Run Regular Service But Offices Will Be Closed Monday, November 12th In Observance of Veterans Day

Fixed-route buses and RIde Program Will Operate Regular Service Monday
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) will run regular service on Monday, November 12, 2018, but its office will be closed in observance of Veterans Day, an official state holiday.

All RIPTA offices, including the Photo Identification Office and Ticket Sales Office in Kennedy Plaza, will not be staffed on Monday, November 12, 2018.

RIPTA and the RIde Program will operate regular service on Monday, November 12, 2018.

| - TRAFFIC ADVISORY UPDATE - |

| RIDOT TO INTRODUCE TRAFFIC PATTERN CHANGES AS PART OF 6/10 INTERCHANGE RECONSTRUCTIONMotorists urged to plan ahead for changes starting Saturday, November 10   |

| The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is reminding motorists of work starting this weekend on a series of traffic pattern changes as construction advances on the reconstruction of the $410 million Route 6/10 Interchange.

The first changes go into effect on Saturday night, November 10. This work was postponed one day because of expected rainy weather forecast for Friday night.

The traffic changes are all temporary, but some will be in place for several months. RIDOT has worked with the design-build contractor to sequence each step of construction to minimize the impact to traffic locally, on the highway interchange, and in the surrounding neighborhoods.

The first traffic pattern changes include lane shifts to move traffic away from the center of the interchange, freeing up a large work zone for construction of new highway and bridge segments. Detour maps and other helpful information can be found on RIDOT's website at www.ridot.net/610. The restrictions scheduled for this fall are as follows:

Saturday, November 10: The Broadway off-ramp, accessible to traffic traveling on Route 6 East to the 6/10 Connector Inbound toward Providence, will be closed for approximately 24 months. A detour using the Hartford Avenue exit will take traffic through Olneyville Square.

Saturday, November 10: When traffic volumes are lightest during the evening and overnight hours, RIDOT will open a temporary section of Route 10 North that has been built next to the current highway alignment. All traffic will shift to the right onto this new roadway, and will use it to access a new, temporary exit to Westminster Street. No lanes will be closed. This will be in place for about 24 months.

Sunday, November 11: RIDOT will introduce a minor lane shift to the right for traffic on the ramp from the 6/10 Connector outbound to Route 6 West. No lanes will be closed. This will be in place for about 12 months.

Weekend of November 11-12: Traffic patterns on Westminster Street and Broadway where they pass over the Route 6/10 highway will be altered slightly so work can begin on new bridge piers. One of the two lanes on Westminster Street eastbound will be closed. All other lanes on both bridges will remain open but may be shifted and narrowed. Segments of sidewalk and bike lanes may be blocked, and signs will be posted to ask cyclists to dismount and direct pedestrians to sidewalks on the opposite side of the road. This traffic pattern on Westminster Street will be in place for approximately three months and the traffic pattern on Broadway will be in place for about nine months. Additional traffic pattern changes will be scheduled for both roads in 2019.

Late November: RIDOT will shift Route 6 East traffic to the left, just after the Hartford Avenue exit. This will put both eastbound and westbound Route 6 traffic on the westbound portion of the highway for bridge replacement over Hartford Avenue and Plainfield Street. The shoulders will be restricted in this area, and lanes will be narrowed for about 12 months. No lanes will be closed.

The 6/10 Interchange and nearby city streets of Westminster Street, Broadway and the road network in and around Olneyville Square are subject to daily traffic congestion and delays. Based on an analysis of traffic volumes and travel times given these traffic pattern changes, RIDOT estimates travel times through the Olneyville area to increase by a minimum of 3 to 5 minutes during peak travel times. Traffic on both Route 6 and Route 10 highway segments can expect an increase of a minimum of 2 to 6 minutes during the morning and evening rush hours. These times are estimates and can vary greatly due to adverse weather and traffic conditions.

The 6/10 Interchange project is scheduled for completion in fall of 2023. Upon completion RIDOT will have replaced seven structurally deficient bridges.

RIDOT strongly recommends both local traffic and commuters consider alternate routes. Both RIPTA bus service and commuter rail from T.F. Green and Wickford Junction stations are available as options to bypass congestion during this important construction project.

RIDOT specified a design-build contract to save time as it allows construction and design to proceed simultaneously. This saves time and money.

| Good afternoon, Due to inclement weather, we're postponing the start of traffic pattern changes at the 6/10 Interchange reconstruction project one day until Saturday, November 10. Here's what you need to know. |

| Carolina Bridges, Charlestown/Richmond 
 Forming and installing reinforcing steel, installing sidewalks and bridge and roadway curbing, are all planned for next week at two of the three bridges along Route 112, from Butter Lane to Carolina Mill Lane. |

| Diamond Hill Road, Cumberland
Next week, we're scheduled to do some drainage work and reclaim (grind) the roadway surface on Diamond Hill Road, with partial lane closures from Industrial Road to I-295 South, Tuesday-Thursday nights from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Delays are anticipated. Once this process is completed, motorists will experience a gravel driving surface for a few days. The next step will be paving, which should start on Sunday night, November 18 for about two nights during the same hours, weather permitting. |

| I-195 Corridor Bridges, East Providence and Providence

We're doing abutment work at the Blackstone Street Bridge, with ongoing curing on the I-95 South bridge deck. We're currently curing the bridge deck at the Parkway Ramp Bridge and have completed deck repairs, approach work and waterproofing at the closed Lyon Avenue Bridge. Our goal is to reopen it in early December.  |

| Nayatt Road Improvements, Barrington
   Plans are to continue pavement reclamation (grinding) early in the week, with paving to follow. Weather permitting, Nayatt Road East and West, from Middle Highway to Bay Road, will be closed to through traffic during these operations, Tuesday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Follow signed detour. As a reminder, motorists will continue to experience a gravel driving surface prior to paving. |

| Pedestrian and Intersection Improvements, Tiverton/Little Compton
We're making safety improvements at 12 intersections statewide, including a new traffic signal at one location, and at others: pedestrian accommodations at existing signals, crosswalks with wheelchair ramps, and minor intersection reconfigurations. Cities and towns covered under this contract include Barrington, Cumberland, East Greenwich, Jamestown, Lincoln, Little Compton, Tiverton and West Warwick/Warwick.    On Fish Road at Route 177 (Bulgarmarsh Road) in Tiverton, we're clearing trees, doing some preliminary drainage work and installing underground conduit. We've started signal work and sidewalk and handicap improvements. Motorists should anticipate alternating one-way traffic during these operations, Tuesday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. On Route 177 (Main Road) in Tiverton, specifically at #1791, and Main Street at Old Harbor Road in Little Compton, we've prepared the handicap ramp areas and should start full construction in the next several weeks. Our goal is to complete all construction in Tiverton and Little Compton, except for final paving, prior to the winter shutdown period in December. |

| Providence River Pedestrian Bridge, Providence
   We're scheduled to install blue stones, wooden panels, and plantings, with the electricians doing some wiring. |

| Route 6/10 Interchange Reconstruction, Providence
Traffic pattern changes are coming to the Route 6/10 Interchange. Effective tomorrow, Saturday night, November 10, we'll be shifting traffic on a temporary section of Route 10 North to move away from the center of the interchange, allowing motorists to use a temporary exit to Westminster Street. We'll also close the Broadway exit from Route 6 East. Both changes will be in place for about 24 months. On Sunday night, November 11, we'll have a minor lane shift to the right for traffic on the ramp from the 6/10 Connector to Route 6 West. This should be in place for about 12 months. During the weekend, one of the two lanes on Westminster Street Eastbound will be closed, and we'll have a traffic shift on Broadway. Once these changes have been made, daytime work will resume behind barrier at the 6/10 Interchange on Tuesday. Lane closures are possible for construction on Route 6 West, from the Tobey Street overpass to Hartford Avenue, Tuesday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. |

| Route 138 (East Main Road) ADA Improvements, Portsmouth  

Paving will take place on Route 138 East and West, from Turnpike Avenue to Boyds Lane, Saturday and Tuesday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. One lane of travel will remain open at all times. We anticipate reopening Park Avenue to all traffic on Monday, November 19. |

Working behind barrier along Route 102 North and South, crews will form parapet walls, approach slabs and end posts, while also installing granite bridge curb. |

| LANE AND RAMP RESTRICTIONS BEGINNING SOON FOR I-295 BRIDGE REPAIRSRestrictions begin Friday, November 16   |

| The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced the start of a $42.6 million construction project to rehabilitate bridges that carry I-295 at its interchange with Routes 6 and 6A in Johnston (Exit 9). This work will require temporary traffic pattern changes including ramp and lane closures that will create traffic congestion and travel delays.

The first set of traffic pattern changes go into effect the weekend of November 16 and will be in place until Summer 2019, after which additional changes will be needed. The greatest delay will affect travelers from Route 6 West to I-295 North.

Construction will be done in phases to minimize the impact to travelers. The work will involve the closure of service roads on both sides of the highway, which will add more volume to mainline travel lanes. This shift is necessary to move traffic away from sections of the bridges to be repaired first.

The bridges to be reconstructed include four large structures about 80 feet wide and 150 to 240 feet long. They carry an average of 76,000 vehicles per day on both through lanes and service roads at this interchange.

Details of the closures will be posted on RIDOT's website (www.ridot.net/295Bridges) and include: I-295 North   
   - Closure of the northbound service road. Access will be maintained for ramps to Route 6 East to Providence (Exit 9A) and Route 6 West toward Hartford, Conn. (Exit 9C).
   - Closure of Exit 9B, which allows traffic to reverse direction to I-295 South.
   - These changes will create minor delays during peak periods. Exit 9B is seldom used and any travelers using it can follow a detour utilizing Exit 9C to an on-ramp to I-295 South.
 I-295 South   
   - Closure of the southbound service road. Access will be maintained for ramps to Route 6 West toward Hartford, Conn. (Exit 9C) and Route 6 East to Providence (Exit 9A).
   - I-295 South already sees heavy traffic during the afternoon rush hour, which causes an average of 10 minutes of additional travel time. RIDOT estimates that delay to increase by a minimum of 3 minutes during peak periods.
 Route 6 West   
   - The ramp from Route 6 West to I-295 North will be reduced from two lanes to one. Traffic will have to merge again with mainline I-295 traffic given the closure of the service road.
   - This change will create the greatest amount of travel time delay, adding a minimum of 10 minutes during afternoon rush hour.

Route 6 East   
   - For travelers using the ramp from Route 6 East to I-295 South, minor delays can be expected given the closure of the I-295 South service road.
 Hartford Avenue (Route 6A)   
   - The on-ramp from Hartford Avenue West to I-295 South will be closed. Modifications will be made to Hartford Avenue to allow left turns onto the ramp to I-295 South used by Hartford Avenue East traffic.
In addition to planning more time for travel, RIDOT recommends motorists consider alternate routes, or plan travel through this area before or after rush hour. The use of transit is encouraged. Seewww.ripta.com for more information.

These bridges are nearly 50 years old, and the superstructures are nearing the end of their service lives. If RIDOT did not do this work now they would continue to deteriorate to the point where a full bridge replacement would be needed, costing up to 30 percent more with longer and more disruptive traffic impacts.

Also as part of this project, RIDOT will decommission two bridges built to accommodate an expansion of the interchange that was never built. RIDOT will fill in under the bridge structures, which will avoid the need to fund maintenance for those bridges.
