Buzz, whir, click, chirp! It’s summer, and the trees, fields, and warm nights are full of sounds! They sound like machinery, but they’re actually insects! Learn how insects make sounds, then make your own instruments with your family using our kit. Watch the Insect Orchestra here or see it on tour at the Rhode Island Museum of Art and Science in August and the RI Natural History Survey in September.

Our next event, "Join the insect orchestra" takes place Saturday August 15 at 10am on Saturday, August 15th at 10am, at Blackstone Field, across from the Narragansett Boat Club (2 River Drive, Providence, RI 02906). Check the 15 Minute Field Trips Facebook page for weather updates.

"Join the insect orchestra"  is part of the “Art and Science at the Park” series with 15 Minute Field Trips. "Art & Science at the Park" is a continuation of the "Art in the Park" series, with more focus on community action to protect wildlife and biodiversity and combat climate change.  Learn about local flora and fauna through art and science activities.  Great for families or to use in the classroom.  Stay longer to enjoy the park, pick up litter, or use your new knowledge to educate others.

This event is led by Melissa Guillet, from 15 Minute Field Trips. Melissa has taught art for over 20 years and is an avid nature-lover involved in gardening, hiking, and collecting data as a citizen scientist.

Councilor Mary Kay Harris's community meeting with the developer of the former Citizens Bank site (The Omni Group) this past Monday included 47 neighbors, the majority of whom overwhelmingly objected to the project as proposed and the deficient public process surrounding it. 

The Omni Group failed to present any development plans during the meeting, and additionally expressed its unwillingness to incorporate neighbor feedback into its plans. Community participants posed substantive, thoughtful, and respectful questions and comments, but were met with dismissive responses from the developer, as described in this important letter.

This is not the meeting or response that the City Plan Commission (CPC) required of The Omni Group, nor the one we demanded. We now call on the CPC, the Providence Department of Planning and Development, and Mayor Jorge Elorza to make this situation right!

What you can do NOW

   - SIGN THE LETTER from WBNA, South Providence Neighborhood Association (SPNA), and PPS. Add your signature by sending an email to kari at wbna.org or by messaging us @wbnapvd on Facebook or Instagram with your full name and address to be included!
   - SHOW UP and speak out at the August 18 CPC meeting held on Zoom, and ask a neighbor and a media outlet to also attend
   - CALL your City Councilor, the Department of Planning and Development (401.680.8400), and Mayor Elorza (401.421.2489), and ask them to support the community in having an authentic seat in decisions that impact us and our neighborhoods. The nature of this development project & public process goes against the City's and Mayor's recent public statement of commitment to making Providence a more equitable city.

Join us in standing up for the values our city claims to care about: inclusion, affordability, mixed-use development, ecological sustainability, development aligned with neighborhood and comprehensive plans, and diversity of housing types that include family and senior housing.

Updated Plans For Fall 2020

On August 11, the University announced revised plans for students' return to campus in the fall. 

Brown will host a community webinar, open to the public, on Thursday, August 20 at 5:00 pm. Please see below for registration information.

Given the current landscape regarding COVID-19, in consultation with public health experts, the University has determined it best to take a phased approach to the start of in-person instruction for the fall semester.

In the first phase, only a limited number of undergraduate students will be permitted to return to campus before Labor Day. The majority of returning undergraduate students will start the Fall 2020 semester studying remotely, preferably outside of the Providence area. All undergraduate classes will be taught remotely from September 9 until the week of October 5. These changes do not affect graduate and medical students, who will return to campus before Labor Day (if they are not already in Providence).

In the second phase, the remainder of students will be invited to return in late September, provided the public health situation has improved, and in-person instruction of small classes will begin. This staggered arrival of students over a longer time period will better position Brown to address challenges, including quarantine and isolation for any students who test positive for COVID-19. This plan also is in keeping with the data-based and public health-based decision making that has driven Brown's planning since the beginning of the pandemic.
