The new Periphery Space @ Paper Nautilus show has been up for a couple of weeks now and the response has been incredible! The work by Madge Slavin is a selection from several decades of creating. She uses collage to structure, develop, and investigate a visual language through the assembled forms. The opening takes place this Saturday from 2-4pm (take note of new day and time!).
I love to “dig deep” to reveal beautiful and/or interesting images that might otherwise pass unnoticed – a treasure hunt, if you will. Very rarely do I start with a preconceived image. Instead they arise from my imagination, evolving instinctively as I work. This is what excites me – the sense of discovery and innovation as I create. Fantasy forms and faces appear out of nowhere, and the process itself is an uncharted adventure, in the same way that life can be.

This February, artists Katie Bullock, Robert Horton, Sean Salstromand Jocelyne Prince invite intercalary events/objects into the Chazan Gallery at Wheeler, the Hay Library's Wills Reading Room(Brown University) and the Ladd Observatory.
Intercalary Event 2020, will run from February 13 to March 4, 2020.There will be an opening reception at the Chazan Gallery on February 13, from 5 to 7 pm.

Belated wishes for the new (or new-ish) year ahead! Despite icy sidewalks and apocalyptic headlines, here at PPL we’re looking steadfastly and sunnily ahead to incipient spring and our grand reopening events – details are coming soon. While waiting, we’re countering the general chill by hosting and supporting communal gatherings here and around town for conversation, music, and readings – just what the season calls for. On Wednesday, January 29 we’ll welcome Community MusicWorks Resident Musician Jesse Holstein and members of the MusicWorks Collective for an evening of exploration, performance, and conversation on the topic of "Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation” in the works of composers Debussy, Bartók, and Zhou Long. This event is free, and takes place in the beautiful, intimate setting of our Grand Balcony, there are very limited seats available - I encourage you to register here now! Free and open to the public! The line between cultural appropriation and appreciation in music can sometimes be difficult to navigate and distinguish. When does a cultural reference in a piece of music go beyond respectfully honoring another culture or heritage and border into exoticism or spectacle? Can music be appropriative if the composer is referencing their own culture?
Join us for a discussion led by CMW Resident Musician Jesse Holstein on the topic of "Cultural Appropriation vs. Appreciation" in anticipation of the Saturday, February 1st concert at the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts. We'll discuss these challenging topics while looking at three works for string quartet that are inspired or influenced by indigenous folk music. Excerpts from works by Debussy, Bartók, and Zhou Long will be performed by the MusicWorks Collective.
