Dear Friends,
Please join us virtually on Monday, October 19 at 6 pm for UNLADYLIKE2020: Art Animates the Archive! 
In November of 2018, in collaboration with the Rhode Island Historical Society (RIHS) and Stages of Freedom, PPL was proud to present Charlotte Mangin, creator of UNLADYLIKE2020, a national video project highlighting trailblazing women from history whose stories had been forgotten, in conversation with local historians and biographers versed in the stories of two Rhode Island women included in the series: opera singer Sissieretta Jones and mountain climber Annie Smith Peck. At the time of that program, the series was just beginning production, and attendees got an exciting sneak peek at the one video that had been finished (featuring the first African American woman pilot, Bessie Coleman). The series was scheduled to debut in 2020, to align with the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote, and Charlotte promised to come back to share the videos of Jones and Peck.
Well, now it’s 2020, and no one can travel. But along with our partners RIHS and Stages of Freedom, we’re thrilled to present a virtual conversation with UNLADYLIKE2020's Creator, Executive Producer, Director & Writer Charlotte Mangin; Executive Producer, Director & Writer Sandra Rattley; Artist & Artistic Director Amelie Chabannes (staying up late to join us from France!); and Motion Graphics Animator & Artistic Director Joel Orloff (Providence’s own!) about how a far-flung team of researchers, writers, producers, and artists worked collaboratively across time zones to research, recover, and then make visible the lives and dynamism of women who, although famous in their own time, had for the most part disappeared from living memory, and whose images and effects had been scattered across decades and distances.
And there's an extra surprise! In the course of their research, team members discovered that another woman chosen for the series, newspaper publisher and 1952 Vice Presidential candidate Charlotta Spears Bass, also had a RI connection (a Little Compton childhood), so attendees to Monday’s event will get to see all three RI-related videos!

In other news, artist, author, activist, archivist, and PPL's peerless Events Coordinator Janaya Kizzie was presented with the Public Humanities Scholar Award by the RI Council for the Humanities at the 2020 Celebration of the Humanities on October 15. Stevos, Mary Beth Meehan, and the Providence Clemente Veterans Initiative!
