Publisher's note: ecoRI News contributor Todd McLeish, who has been writing for us since early 2016, is retiring at the end of the month. The Burrillville, R.I., resident wrote mostly about wildlife and nature, and two of his stories — one about snake worms published in 2019 and the other about a large buoy from a lobster boat based in Point Judith, R.I., that washed ashore on the coast of Belgium published in 2018 — have been among the most-viewed in ecoRI News history. We wish Todd all the best and thank him for his contributions.

And one final programming note. The last two newsletters of December will feature the top-20 most-clicked stories of 2021. It is always informative for us to see what stories you unintentionally voted for with your clicks. — Joanna Detz

But standing boot-deep in the peat, surrounded by the sulfuric scent of decomposition, the bare ground is clear evidence of the steady saltwater creep happening here. READ MORE

Two Sides of the Climate Coin: Sea-Level Rise and Extreme Weather

This Dec. 8 panel discussion, also hosted by URI's Metcalf Institute, was moderated by ecoRI News editor Frank Carini. The discussion focused on the fact coastal communities face a double threat from the climate crisis: sea-level rise and more frequent extreme-rain events. These overlapping crises compound flood risks and present challenges for infrastructure, environmental justice, public safety, and local economies.
