[Summit] speed bumps

Omg I took the Smithfield Ave exit off 95 N this AM for the first time in 10 days. Those black asphalt cushion speed bumps are really scary . I didn’t anticipate the first set : WHAM! I crawled over the second, positioning my car to straddle the edge of 2 of them. Awful experience
And they are ugly also

One of the sets of bumps on Rochambeau is in the middle of the intersection to turn onto summit ave. I too have seen folks swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid them. They seem to work best when they are across both lanes in the same spot.

I live on 10th street, and people race up this street (and right through the stop signs) and the word is that we were told that we couldn't have speed bumps because of the ambulances, but if that's the case, there are a lot of street that shouldn't have them.

>> Twice now I've been nearly hit while in the crosswalk, walking across Rochambeau on the west side of Hope Street. Cars come flying down Hope Street and barely pause while making a quick turn on the way down to North Main. I guess they're thinking "Hey, I can miss her with inches to spare!" And so far they have -- but it's pretty nerve-wracking. And what if they're not the precision drivers that they think they are? Not a lot a pedestrian can do if they come up from behind when you're already in the crosswalk.

Good bumps, as I understand it, are wide and parabolic. At low speeds, they are easy to drive over and plows handle them easily. Bad bumps are unpleasant at any speed and impossible for plows. The good ones are more expensive and take more planning. An example of the good ones are in Kennedy plaza.

>> There was no consultation with the neighborhood association and this is generally a surprise to me. I much prefer neckdowns to speed bumps. I understand some of the background on the notion of traffic calming on these streets was discussed at community meetings Councilor LaFortune hosted, though she noted on our Facebook group that she didn?t know the speed bumps were being deployed until she saw them. Her Facebook comments are below:
>>
>> ?Hi Ethan, I actually did not know the city was installing the speed bumps the until I saw them. We have talked about the speeding and traffic mitigation at many community meetings, where folks have asked aboug speed bumps. For the last three years the traffic engineer has been conducting speed counts/traffic studies throughout the ward. Many people have complained about the speeding on all the streets. It looks like the speed bumps were the recommendations from the traffic commission. All recommendations are align with safety protocols and include imput from public safety (fire, police EMS). I do wish we were given a heads up. I am getting more information. I too live on the corner of one of these streets And have watched cars, motorcycles speed from N. Main to hope. Parents and residents have complained about speeding on cemetery road, and MHCC is asking for speed bumps on Camp. I'll get more details about how the decision was made.....and ask for information to share.?

>> | Councilwoman's Letter
>> May 16, 2021
>> Dear Neighbor,
>> Next month will mark sixteen years since my dear friend, my partner, the person I loved in life was cut short by gun violence as he walked out of a bodega in New York City. He was mistakenly struck by a bullet intended for someone standing outside the store. Our lives were changed forever by a needless act of violence.?
>> ?
>> For three consecutive days, our city has experienced a rash of violence. Yesterday's incident took place on Camp Street in front of Billy Taylor Park, a neighborhood park where my daughter plays and where I?ve hosted various events to bring the community together.
>> ?
>> I am heartbroken and appalled by these unthinkable acts of violence. The epidemic of gun violence is destroying our communities, injecting fear into our neighborhoods and further dividing our city. It must stop.
>> ?
>> The issue of gun violence is systemic and we must address the root cause. On Friday, May 14th,?I reached out to the Mayor, the Police Commissioner and Chief, the Attorney General, the Executive Director of the Nonviolence Institute, and community leaders to convene a meeting to discuss how we can work collaboratively to create a comprehensive plan to address the gun violence in our community and also ensure meaningful and impactful ways to serve our young people. Creating solutions is often a bottom-up process and we?ve got to find ways to engage our young people who are often disenfranchised, struggling, and in some cases, very angry.?
>> ?
>> I have had the privilege to go on ride-alongs with the Nonviolence Institute?s street workers and the police department to see firsthand the impact of such violence on communities and on lives. I am committed to continuing to work with the Mayor's administration, the police department, and community partners to stop gun violence in Providence and develop solutions to prevent these violent crimes from happening. Talk is not the answer. Action is.
>> ?
>> I will update you as our meetings progress. And, please reach out to me if you have ideas on this issue. It?s by sharing what we know and working together as a community that we will make significant change.?
>> ?
>> With love for our city,?

I understand some of the background on the notion of traffic calming on these streets was discussed at community meetings Councilor LaFortune hosted, though she noted on our Facebook group that she didn?t know the speed bumps were being deployed until she saw them. Her Facebook comments are below:

We have ?talked about the speeding and traffic mitigation at many community meetings, where folks have asked aboug speed bumps.

Years ago, I helped bring curb extensions to the neighborhood for the same purpose: to reduce speeding and making our streets more pedestrian-friendly.? We looked at speed bumps back then, and there were strong emotions for and against.? One thing I learned was that there are good bumps and bad bumps.? Good bumps, as I understand it, are wide and parabolic.? At low speeds, they are easy to drive over and plows handle them easily.? Bad bumps are unpleasant at any speed and impossible for plows.? The good ones are more expensive and take more planning.? An example of the good ones are in Kennedy plaza.

I only wish they'd consider them for Hope street which, most days, is like a scene out of Mad Max. I'm sure that many here have noticed how many vehicles still fail to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, despite it being state law. Perhaps speed bumps on Hope street would reduce "braking apathy" and deter drivers/riders from using it as a cruising strip?
