JDA Monthly Meeting

5:00 pm, Tuesday, October 12

Another month, another batch of hot topics on the JDA table.

ZOOM in and join the discussion!

Finishing the River Walk to Point Street.

Gregg Herlong, Senior Director of Development for Wexford Science & Technology in Baltimore, will Zoom in to explain the hows and whens for completing the River Walk — from bulkhead restoration and foot-bridge building to landscaping. When the work is done, we’ll have an exciting new landmark in the District.

Finding a workable formula for safe, free-flowing

car, bike and pedestrian traffic in the District.

A new bike lane (to nowhere) was just installed on three blocks of Chestnut St. A disastrous bike lane is going in on South Water St. that will surely send frustrated 195-bound drivers looking for a route through the District. How can we make things work for everybody—

whether they’re in cars, on bikes or on foot?

Plus: our regular update from the police, news about

autumn tree-planting, new development projects on Richmond St.

and, as they say on TV, much more!

| NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

Civic Engagement Soars. As many neighbors know, former City Councilor Sam Zurier won the October 5 democratic primary for the District 3 senate seat, with almost 1,300 votes out of 4,000 in a five-way race. But voters turned out in historic numbers for another event, as well: the mid-September candidate's forum hosted by four neighborhood groups (including FPNA), which was attended by an eye-popping 250 people, likely a record for a neighborhood meeting. Congratulations to the candidates for a lively, issue-focused race—and to neighbors for record participation! Find a recap in the ProJo, here, and four "takeaways" by Dan McGowan of the Globe, here. Image, Sam Zurier.

Developers to Speak With Fox Point Neighbors. Attention, neighbors! Three Boston-based developers will appear at our October FPNA meeting next Tuesday, October 12, to present building proposals for the area known as Parcel 2, located at Transit Street between Water and South Main streets. All three proposals are available to view in advance; see the plan by Urbanica, here, Eden Properties, here, and Parent & Diamond, here. Find recent write-ups in the ProJo, here, and PBN, here. Find architect Dave Brussat's "Two rotten eggs and a peach" opinion, here. Find meeting information on the poster, below. Image, Parent & Diamond.

Brown Dorms Coming Soon. As many neighbors know, a coalition of neighborhood groups circulated a petition this past spring and sent letters to Brown University president Christina Paxson asking the university to scale back plans for two large dormitories on Brook Street between Charlesfield and Power. The university made a few concessions to neighbors, but is largely moving ahead as planned this fall. Find a recent ProJo Letter to the Editor from coalition leaders, here. Read Brown's update on construction plans, here. Find an opinion from architect Will Morgan on the "mauling" of nearby Thayer Street, here. Image, Brown University.

Opinions Wanted! Are you concerned about a historic building in Providence? A beloved structure that appears down around the edges (or insides)? The Providence Preservation Society is accepting applications through tomorrow for its 2022 Most Endangered Properties List. Submit your application under the wire, here. Learn more, here. Image, PPS.

Sidewalk Sale Resumes. Come one, come all! The Makers and Merchants Sidewalk Sale is back, with local vendors selling food, drink, and wares this Saturday on Wickenden Street from 11am-6pm. Learn more, here. (Also, if you download the city's parking app, you can park for free. Learn more, here). Image, here. |
