First things first, friend — I hope you’re safe and warm.

This storm is shaping up to be one of the worst we’ve seen in many years. As of 2:00 PM it looks like we even beat the record from the blizzard of ‘78!

I did my first round of shoveling this morning and if you’re doing the same, be careful not to overdo it. Take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, pace yourself and if you need help, ask! And please check in on neighbors who may need a hand.

Now a few important reminders and resources:

|
 🚫 Parking + Travel Ban

The parking ban is in effect. The Governor has instituted a travel ban, so please do not attempt to drive right now. Both remain in effect until further notice. Parking is available for permit holders in designated lots: https://www.providenceri.gov/public-works/snow-parking-program/

 🔥 Warming Centers

Information about warming centers can be found here:
https://www.providenceri.gov/pema/warming-centers/

 🏛 City Services

City offices are closed (at least today). 311 is operating extended hours. If you need to report a non-emergency issue, call 311. In an emergency, always call 911 (not 311).

 🗑 Trash & Recycling

Collection will be delayed until Wednesday. Please pull bins in and do not leave them blocking the street.

 ⚡ Power Outages

If you lose power, contact Rhode Island Energy at 855-743-1102. Always assume downed wires are live and keep your distance.

 ❤️ Safety Tips

Keep your generators outside and far from windows and doors. Avoid using ovens or grills to heat your home. If you are using a space heater, keep them 3 feet from walls and flammable items!

I’m so grateful to the plow drivers, public works crews, utility workers, and first responders who are out there in these conditions working to keep us safe.

Storms like this are hard — but they also remind me how strong Rhode Island communities are. We shovel each other’s sidewalks. We text to check in. We lend a hand when someone needs it.

If you have a non-emergency question, you can always reply here or reach out on social media! I’ll continue sharing updates on Facebook, Bluesky, and Instagram throughout the day.

We’ll get through this together. One shovel at a time.

With care,

Sue
