I also found that letter a little "strange", but the whole issue feels a little strange to me... I was one of the people who attended a meeting at the library with the Neighborhood Assn, Friends of the Library and the Library fund-raisers and a lawyer of theirs, if I remember correctly. About 20 people, or a little less.

<br>There were, at least in my opinion, several good compromises proposed, at least three quite different approaches, which were still huge "attention getters" for the donors, while being more respectful of the neighborhood sensitivities. 

I find it hard to believe a couple who care enough about the library to offer to donate that much money, would be so attached to a particular sign. I doubt they personally proposed its design.  Everyone seemed very sincere, but I somehow I couldn't "get it"... or something...  I know first hand that serious fundraising is challenging, but I was left feeling there was some hidden agenda not being disclosed; I felt there was no point in spending my time trying to negotiate with you-don't-know-what-actual-opposition.  I was thankful I was just a nobody "civilian with an idea" and free to go home.
