building since he was a year old, and went downhill quickly after his<br>parents died. The police had to be called on numerous occasions. It was<br>sad and sometimes scary to see our neighbor in this condition; there<br>was no way he could take care of himself. We were afraid he'd become<br>
homeless, which would be my fear for this woman, too.<br><br>So the neighbors, including us, took an interest and arranged for the<br>services to which he is entitled by law. He has a home keeper every day<br>to cook, shop, and clean for him (provided by a nearby social services<br>
agency), and the city sends someone to give him medication in injection<br>form--twice a month, I think--since he's unable to keep track of it<br>himself. He receives Social Security disability. The rent gets paid.<br>

(unfortunately for<br> the quiet library). ?But she doesn't stay long and the staff seems<br>to accept<br>she just talks loudly and continually and then leaves. ?She doesn't<br>otherwise bother anyone. ?She does NOT seem to be aggressive or even<br>
particularly upset, only sounds like she feels she has something<br>urgent to<br>tell us, but what that is - is not clear to me. ?(I've never heard any<br>specific insults or comments directed at me.) Then she goes on her<br>
way.<br><br>Our social services systems are not perfect, and sometimes people who<br>could<br>benefit, steer clear because of the down sides of interacting with<br>that<br>system.<br><br>Some people just like being pretty "different ." Maybe she feels fine<br>

speaks volumes about our society's criminalization of mental<br>illness.<br>?<br>I would<br>strongly?discourage?neighbors?from thinking that all that is<br>required here is a caring shoulder to lean on.? Should she?continue to<br>
