A substantial crowd (my guess is 75-100 people) gathered around the
fountain as Parks Supt Bob McMahon stood on the edge of the fountain to
speak.<br><br>
Bob recapped the history of the project, including meetings with SNA, and
ended by acknowledging that his department had made a terrible mistake by
not assuring wider awareness of the plan before work began last week. He
said the idea in removing the two rows of trees to the east and west
(Blvd and Hope St) sides of the fountain was to make the rejuvenated
fountain more visible for both aesthetic and security reasons. And the
idea in removing the inner ring of trees to the north and south was to
allow more grass to grow while preserving shade. But he acknowledged
repeatedly that those ideas had not been adequately communicated in
advance.<br><br>
At the Mayor's direction, only two more trees will be cut down now to
allow access for construction equipment and digging a utility trench
between the pump house at the Hope St side and the fountain. Deadwood
will be pruned out of the remaining trees and in some cases lower
branches may be cut off to raise the canopy. A new landscape design
planning process has been started and Bob promised that its results will
be presented to the community for comment, likely by fall and definitely
before any new work is done. Meantime, fountain restoration will proceed
as planned.<br><br>
After speaking, Bob took questions and comments from everyone who wanted
to express their views. He promised that the stumps of the eight trees
that were cut last week would be removed promptly. Several speakers
recommended that neighbors who wanted to keep up with local issues should
