A few musings:

I think I understand the psychology of switching the size of the barrels
but I’m not sure at all that it is a wise move.

We recycle curbside just about everything we can here, and donate used
clothing etc. The most recycling (not counting yard waste) that I can
remember was filling the equivalent of three recycling boxes, and that was
when we were cleaning out paper files. Even with bottles and cans from
a very large party I can’t imagine ever filling the 95 gallon can with
recycling, unless we didn’t bring it out every week, but that’s not allowed
if we want the garbage picked up.

Most weeks we barely make a dent in the green garbage barrel … we just
don’t have that much waste after composting food scraps and recycling all we
can. So in normal times, the new grey barrel should be
okay.

But as Mrs B. noted, there are a few times in the year that we do fill
the full green barrel.

I’m thinking that those non-recyclers in the city who need the
extra space will just dump their garbage into the green barrel (along with
the people who won’t pay attention to the changes and are habituated to the
green barrel equaling trash). With pick up automated, I would predict that
the recycling folks are going to have a lot more unwanteds on their hands
for some time.

And I’m wondering about the metal and aluminum trollers negotiating the
green cans. Perhaps it will dissuade them, or will we see lots of dumped
over green cans throughout our neighborhoods?
