From April 2016 through February 2017, thousands of Native and non-Native people made the North Dakota Plains their home to stand in opposition of the proposed Dakota Access Pipeline. As the protesters faced police, roadblocks and heavy surveillance, a group of photographic drone operators emerged within their ranks, sending their flying cameras up and over barricades to illuminate spaces hidden from the public, unmask the face of force and show the world the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Their images motivated countless Americans to join the resistance, whether in person, on social media or through donations — and kickstarted a new movement of aesthetic protest.
