In the early modern period, there were no intellectual copyright laws in place to prevent editors and publishers to adapt texts in order to sell their wares. Authors would often change their work to reflect popular views of the time, and translators would often do far more than just translate. This exhibition follows several of the most celebrated texts related to the early modern Americas as they made their way from inaugural to subsequent editions, ruminating on this question: When does a text stop being “original” and start becoming something else?
