The story of being Black in America is, in many ways, the story of
forced removal from home. In this talk, Azzurra Cox explores how
American narratives of the natural — from the sublime scale of our
national parks to the intimate scale of our everyday landscapes — have
historically entailed an erasure of nuanced, often fraught Black
narratives around land and belonging. Drawing from her research and
practice as a landscape designer, she illustrates how reclaiming these
landscapes — and the stories therein — is an act of both cultural memory
and cultural projection.

This event explores the contested meanings of “refugee” — as a
geopolitical label of national non-belonging; as familial stories of
injustice, humanity and survival (which both haunt and unite); and as
contemporary plight in need of political and social action. Focused on
the case of the Vietnamese refugee exodus, this panel invites
participants to present on a specific “archive” or “artifact” of refugee
exodus. By considering the material and affective significance of
specific refugee archives, we seek to engage questions of refugee
agency, narrative authority, the politics of deservingness, and
community identity.

While much has been written about the impact of the 1979 Islamic

AMMONITE

In 1800s England, acclaimed but unrecognized fossil hunter Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) works alone on the rugged Southern coastline. With the days of her famed discoveries behind her, she now searches for common fossils to sell to tourists to support herself and her ailing mother. When a wealthy visitor entrusts Mary with the care of his wife Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), she cannot afford to turn his offer down. Proud and relentlessly passionate about her work, Mary initially clashes with her unwelcome guest, but despite the distance between their social class and personalities, an intense bond begins to develop, compelling the two women to determine the true nature of their relationship.
---We're Keeping You Safe At the Avon Cinema---

Following the CDC and state and local guidelines, we have instituted new procedures to keep everyone safe.

Many seats and rows have been closed to ensure proper spacing between guests. Seats that are available are easily identified with white tape at the top of the seat back. No one will be directly in front of or in back of another person. Two people arriving together may sit together. If someone comes alone, they may not sit next to another person who came alone.

Guests buying tickets will notice tape on the floor at 6 foot intervals leading up to the box office. There are decals on the lobby floor at 6 foot intervals that lead up to the concession stand and the auditorium.

If you are paying with a credit card, our terminal is now accessible to you. Our cashier will prompt you when to insert or remove your card. You may also tear your receipt directly from the credit card machine. You may also pay with cash.

At the end of each show, we clean and sanitize the theatre (including seats, armrests, counters, bathrooms, door handles, hand rails, etc.) before admitting people in for the next show.

Face masks are worn at all times except while you are sitting in the auditorium. Remember to wear your face mask to exit after the show.

We look forward to seeing all of you again!
