new year! I'm writing to let you know that Brown's student move-in will
take place between Saturday, 1/9 - Tuesday, 1/12. Move-in has been
spread over several days this year to reduce density on campus and in
the surrounding neighborhoods.</font></p><p style="margin:0px 0px 1.5em;padding:0px;line-height:1.5em;color:rgb(47,42,32);"><font face="georgia, serif">December's edition of our department newsletter, <i>Community Currents</i>,
addressed questions about students' return to campus, included below.
(If you are not yet subscribed to our newsletter and would like to be,
please let me know).</font></p><font face="georgia, serif">"Spring 2021
move-in will take place between Jan. 9-12 and will include a limited
number of students from all class years. Approximately 75% of
undergraduates will return, living in a mix of Brown-provided housing on
and off campus (including some local apartments and hotels) and
off-campus housing. Others will continue to study remotely from their
homes away from Rhode Island or register as commuters if their family’s
permanent residence is within 30 miles of Providence.<br><br>Upon
arrival in Providence in January, all undergraduates will complete a
14-day Quiet Period. All students will receive two COVID-19 tests in
their first week of arrival — an 'arrival' test and a 'second-round'
test. <br><br>During the Quiet Period, undergraduates living on campus
will be required to remain in their residence halls. They will not be
permitted to leave their residence halls except to get a COVID-19 test,
receive care from Health Services, or to pick up dining hall meals.
Students living off campus will be required to quarantine in their
residences in accordance with guidance from the Rhode Island Department
of Health. All students will be enrolled in Brown’s testing protocol,
and off-campus students may come to campus to get a COVID-19 test or

First and foremost, Happy New Year to you all.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
I had hoped this first email of 2021 would be one highlighting only good things happening on our campus and in our community. However, as I write this, the chaos brought to the Capitol early this week is still reverberating around the world with images and stories both upsetting and disappointing. And yet, there is still hope on the horizon.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
In response to the events in Washington, DC, President Somerson sent a letter to the campus reaffirming RISD’s institutional commitment to a community that benefits from diversity, inclusiveness, and equity, free of systemic barriers and incidents of discrimination, harassment, and violence.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
“We as a community and a country must come together to make it clear that we will not tolerate violence, and will not allow the results of a free and fair election to be overturned. We must reaffirm our values, our humanity and the will of the people, particularly those who fought and still fight for their right to vote. The violence and destruction that took place yesterday goes well beyond our rights of free speech and protest, and threatens the very structures on which democracy relies,” she said.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
In addition, she encouraged the RISD community to recognize that it has the collective power and influence to make change and to continue the institution’s mission that advances truth, justice, openness and the greater good.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
So, with that hopeful theme, below I share a few stories highlighting the ways RISD faculty, staff, students, and alumni are creating positive change on campus, in local communities, and around the world.<br clear="none">

This year, RISD Winterssion classes will be offered online only, with limited exceptions made for on-campus and in-person make-up coursework. Faculty and staff whose work does not require an on-campus presence are asked to not come to campus during Wintersession.<br clear="none">

For the Spring 2021 semester, which begins February 22, RISD will again operate a de-densified campus. The institution remains committed to keeping the entire RISD community —students, faculty, staff and our neighbors alike – informed on policies, procedures and safeguards put in place. <p style="margin:10px 0 0;padding:0;font-family:Arial;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:15px;line-height:22px;text-align:left;white-space:inherit !important;">In a letter to the RISD community at the end of the year, President Somerson sent a message to the campus community to highlight its collective progress in the previous 12 months. Below is just a sampling of what was achieved despite being faced with some of the most challenging and extreme conditions the institution has ever faced.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Pivoted 800 classes to virtual settings</strong>: RISD faculty, techs and staff adapted our curricula and pedagogy in more than 800 classes to a virtual setting, resulting in innovative ways of making and learning we never imagined possible.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Achieved second-best fundraising year on record:</strong> Completing the second-best fundraising year on record for RISD (after 2018–19), RISD received $24.7 million from alumni, parents, students, and friends of the institution.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Addressed a $50 million deficit:</strong> Thanks to the shared sacrifice of RISD employees, success in fundraising and enrollment, prudent cost-savings initiatives, and innovative new revenue sources, RISD weathered the economic fallout of the pandemic and hopes to maintain a healthy financial picture for the future.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Made significant strides in financial aid:</strong> Financial aid was increased by 23 percent for academic year 2020–21, the greatest margin ever, and RISD raised $15.8 million for student financial aid, the highest amount of aid support in the institution’s history.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Welcomed the first cohort of Society of Presidential Fellows:</strong> RISD welcomed the first five graduate students who are receiving full-tuition funding for the duration of their program. Since August 2019, RISD has raised $15 million to fund a new program that recruits and supports outstanding graduate students.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Launched phase II of the SEI Action Plan:</strong> Responding to the demands of faculty and students, RISD made new commitments to equity and inclusion, including a new cluster hire, a new Office of Discrimination and Title IX, revised search policies, transformed curricula and new courses, robust student and anti-racism programming and other significant initiatives.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Advanced social justice initiatives at the museum:</strong> The RISD Museum committed 75 percent of its annual acquisition budget to the purchase of works by underrepresented artists; launched the Americas Research Initiative (ARI)—a partnered program supporting the multiyear study of Mesoamerican, Native American and First Nations art and design; and deaccessioned the Head of a King (Oba), a Beninese bronze sculpture.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Integrated health and counseling services:</strong> RISD welcomed a new Executive Director of Health and Wellness, Bob Samuels, co-located Health Services and Counseling and Psychological Services and expanded its staffing, services and programming, resulting in significant increases in students seen, appointment availability and same-day access for both areas.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Pivoted Continuing Education classes online and achieved record enrollment:</strong> Despite canceling both Young Artist classes (ages 6–12) and Pre-College, teen enrollment was up by 86 percent and Adult Extension is up by 30 percent year-over-year for fall. The percentage of classes with 10 or more students has grown from 38 to 90 percent. Before COVID-19, the percentage of CE students was hyper-local: 90 percent of the student population lived in RI, CT or MA. That number has now flipped with only 10 percent of the student population being from this tri-state area.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Launched two new cutting-edge academic programs:</strong> RISD launched a joint Master of Arts in Design Engineering (MADE) program with Brown University, which fosters innovation at the intersection of design and engineering, as well as a new Master of Fine Arts in Illustration, a one-calendar year, 60-credit advanced studio degree program, the first of its kind at RISD.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Expanded research activity and support: </strong>RISD Research supported 75 projects that reflect school-wide, divisional, department and individual faculty efforts and directly connected with more than 60 faculty members to support their research activities.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Provided classes to 145 underserved youth:</strong> Continuing Education partnered with the Rhode Island Department of Education to offer free online art and design classes to underserved youth as part of the Summer Academy for Interactive Learning (SAIL).<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Completed Nickerson Hall and the Met renovations:</strong> Nickerson Hall was renovated over the summer, marking the end of phase II of the multiyear Quad block enhancement project and making major strides in energy efficiency. The Met Refectory kitchen was updated to state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Launched alumni engagement initiatives:</strong> Significant strides were made in engaging with global alumni through a new alumni website, alumni travel program, alumni insurance program and alumni collection in the Fleet Library.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
<strong style="font-weight:bold;">Increased operational efficiency: </strong>RISD completed the implementation of scheduling software and the adoption of a central learning management system and improving capital planning through the new structure.</p>

<p style="margin:10px 0 0;padding:0;font-family:Arial;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;font-size:15px;line-height:22px;text-align:left;white-space:inherit !important;">Roger Mandle, RISD’s 15th president, passed away late last year after a long illness. An academic leader, educator, art historian, head of major museums, painter and former member of the National Committee for Education Standards in the Arts and the National Council on the Arts, Mandle devoted his life to arts, culture and humanities education and helped steer the art and design agenda in this country and internationally over many decades.<br clear="none">
<br clear="none">
Mandle is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gayle Wells Mandle, an accomplished artist who earned her MFA in Painting and Printmaking at RISD in 1997; son and daughter-in-law Luke Mandle and Lorna Ross; daughter Julia Mandle; five beloved grandchildren: Sasha, Coco, Lulu, Osgar, and Boaz; and his sister and brother-in-law Julia and Stephen Kiechel.<br clear="none">
