In this talk, K. Meira Goldberg of the Fashion Institute of Technology will discuss the Blackness of flamenco, tracing how the dance’s ostentatious rebelliousness, tumultuous sensuality, quixotic idealism and fierce soulfulness embody resistance, the lament for what has been lost and the values and aspirations of those rendered imperceptible by abjection, enslavement and colonization. Goldberg’s talk will introduce audience members to performers such as El Negro Meri, the first male flamenco dancer to be captured on film, whose Blackness is only now becoming visible. </div>

Kicking off the Department of East Asian Studies’ annual Japan Week, Boston University’s Sarah Frederick will deliver the lecture “Yoshiya Nobuko and Reading Like a Girl.” Nobuko was best known for writing for and about young women or “shōjo.” An important experience of girlhood for her was forming passionate friendships with other young women, which she argued could be the basis for ethical behavior throughout life. Her defining role in defining “girl culture” in Japan remains important to her influence on popular culture to this day. </div>

Mark Steinbach, University organist and senior lecturer in music, will perform Oliver Messiaen’s “La Nativité du Seigneur, Neuf Méditations pour orgue” (“The birth of the Lord, Nine Meditations for Organ”), on the 1903 Hutchings-Votey pipe organ in Sayles Hall. The recital will be broadcast virtually. The premiere of La Nativité took place in 1936 in Paris with three separate performers, each performing three movements, but Steinbach will perform the work in its entirety. </div>

Pottery has proven to be a critical archaeological resource due to its widespread use and accessibility throughout time. Sometimes archaeologists find whole pots during their excavations, but more often than not, they encounter broken pieces called sherds. This exhibit looks at archaeologists’ experiences with sherds and what these seemingly insignificant pieces of pottery can tell us about the past. </div>

This workshop is designed to give wider exposure to incoming Postdoctoral Research Associate in Palestine and Palestinian Studies Ashjan Ajour’s work on Palestinian hunger striking. Although theoretically informed literature on hunger strikes in Northern Ireland and Turkey exist, there is an absence of such literature about hunger strikes in Palestine, and Ajour’s study provides a first step toward filling this gap. </div>

In this virtual talk titled “Debt, Guilt, Responsibility, Obligation,” feminist scholar Judith Butler will consider how best to de-link debt and guilt in the context of the intensification of student debt in recent years and the movement in favor of debt forgiveness. The argument will seek to show that public obligations to either free or affordable education rely upon a notion of the public good that severs debt from guilt. </div>

Keith Wilson, curator of ancient Chinese art at the Freer Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art, and Jeffrey Moser, assistant professor of East Asian art at Brown, will discuss cast bronze musical instruments from early China. They will explore some of the challenges that Wilson faced in developing the exhibition Resound: Ancient Bells of China (Oct. 14, 2017 – July 5, 2021), and discuss the strategies that he and his team adopted to give life to the fragile sounds and furtive musicality of these instruments. </div>

Many Americans harbor concerns about the future viability of social security, and they have questions about how it and Medicare are funded and how they work. Nancy Altman, president of Social Security Works and the chair of the Strengthen Social Security Coalition, will join Taubman Center Interim Director Richard Arenberg to discuss the current politics and future health of social security and Medicare. Special attention will be paid to the question of what these programs mean to members of the younger generations. </div>

Professor Nadje Al-Ali and Brown student Rita Slaoui will co-host a virtual panel with Soudade Kaadan, director of the film “The Day I Lost My Shadow.” In the film, as winter hits hard in Syria, all Sana wants is to cook a hot meal for her son. When a seemingly simple errand search for gas goes awry, Sana is dragged into Syria’s deep internecine conflicts, where people lose their shadows. </div>

Assessments of the prospects for economic diplomacy typically focus on apparent material capabilities and their potential coercive power. Less attention has been paid to a crucial permissive factor: the robustness of the domestic social economy of a state contemplating the practice of economic warfare. </div>

“Transient Matter” brings the realities, perils and humanity of migrations and border-crossings to life through an exhibition of things discarded by migrants who crossed the Aegean to reach Greece, artwork created by migrants in camps and detention centers once there, and photographs and videos produced by the curators. Originally held in person, this online exhibition differs slightly to accommodate the transition from physical to virtual. </div>

Pottery has proven to be a critical archaeological resource due to its widespread use and accessibility throughout time. Sometimes archaeologists find whole pots during their excavations, but more often than not, they encounter broken pieces called sherds. This exhibit looks at archaeologists’ experiences with sherds and what these seemingly insignificant pieces of pottery can tell us about the past. </div>
