I know this is a concern of the merchants on Wickenden St due to the new construction at Brook St, and I remember when Thayer Street was all independents. When my sister-in-law visited from Naperville, IL, last fall, she remarked on how fortunate we are to have such charming shops full of small-maker and artisanal items. She did a lot of her holiday shopping on Hope Street. Downtown Naperville used to have a lot of independents.
