Crews worked throughout the night to open main roads, emergency routes and hospital corridors first so public safety vehicles could move. Many of those streets are now passable, but most are not yet down to pavement and will require multiple passes to fully clear over the coming days.Residential and side streets will take longer. In many areas, 3 feet deep snow, drifting and vehicles left abandoned prevented plows from safely operating overnight. Some streets require front loaders and heavy equipment rather than standard plow trucks, which is slower but necessary work based on the incredible amount of snow we received.It\u2019s important to understand that streets are not cleared based on individual requests. Crews are working through the city in a set order: emergency routes first, then major corridors and trash routes and then residential streets. If a street has not yet been cleared, it has not been forgotten. Crews have not reached it yet and reporting it does not necessarily expedite the process if the team cannot reach the street. This will be a multi-day cleanup effort. Opening a street once is only the first step. Crews must return to widen roads, remove snowbanks and address drifted snow. Abandoned and stuck vehicles are also slowing progress and towing operations are underway so plows can safely get through with support from the state. We ask residents to keep vehicles off the road and respect the travel ban and to avoid travel whenever possible so crews and emergency services can operate safely.Property owners are encouraged to begin clearing sidewalks and entrances as soon as it is safe to do so to help restore access across neighborhoods prior to any temperatures dropping. The parking ban remains in effect. We will share updates as conditions improve. For non-emergency issues or service requests, please contact 311 which is operating with extended hours. For emergencies, always call 911.We know these conditions are disruptive. Our crews and partners are fully deployed and working continuously, but recovery from a storm of this size takes days, not hours. Thank you for helping share this information and for your patience as the city works to remove as much snow as possible.<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">| <br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr"> | <br></div><div dir="ltr">Carina Monge<br></div><div dir="ltr">Community Engagement Coordinator<br></div><div dir="ltr">Pronoun: she/her/hers<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Mayor's Center for City Services<br></div><div dir="ltr">Providence City Hall<br></div><div dir="ltr">25 Dorrance Street<br></div><div dir="ltr">Providence, RI 02903<br></div><div dir="ltr"><a href="mailto:cmonge@providenceri.gov" target="_blank">cmonge@providenceri.gov</a><br></div><div dir="ltr">401-680-5514<br></div><div dir="ltr">Cell:401-339-7949<br></div><div dir="ltr">Call to Connect |PVD311<br></div><div dir="ltr">TTY Relay: via 711<br></div><div dir="ltr"> |<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">From: Monge, Carina <<a href="mailto:Cmonge@providenceri.gov" target="_blank">Cmonge@providenceri.gov</a>><br></div><div dir="ltr">Sent: Saturday, February 21, 2026 5:10 PM<br></div><div dir="ltr">Subject: Providence Winter Weather Update Good afternoon,<br></div><div dir="ltr">I\u2019m writing to share an important update regarding the major winter storm expected to impact Providence beginning tomorrow evening and continuing into Monday.<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">The National Weather Service predicts this storm will be one of the most substantial winter weather events our state has experienced in a very long time. Given the scale of this recovery, cancelling this week and<br></div><div dir="ltr">restarting cleanly on Monday is the most responsible and efficient course<br></div><div dir="ltr">of action.<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">*This approach allows us to:*<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">\u2022 Keep all crews and equipment focused on opening residential streets<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">\u2022 Avoid placing carts into roadways that are not yet safely passable<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">\u2022 Prevent conflicts between sanitation operations and snow removal<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">\u2022 Restart collection uniformly across every neighborhood<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">We are actively scaling up heavy equipment including additional backhoes,<br></div><div dir="ltr">front loaders, and hauling trucks to widen and open residential streets as<br></div><div dir="ltr">quickly as possible. That work remains the top operational priority.<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">For context, several other communities across the state have also cancelled<br></div><div dir="ltr">trash collection this week due to similar recovery conditions.<br></div><div dir="ltr"><br></div><div dir="ltr">Overflow trash bags will be available beginning Thursday at City Hall, Room<br></div><div dir="ltr">101, and at the Chapman Street DPW facility. The call center remains<br></div><div dir="ltr">staffed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to assist with concerns.
