CHILDREN’S HEALTH WORKSHOP ADDRESSES TOXIC TOYS,
ASTHMA AND MORE AT FREE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
CONFERENCE THIS SATURDAY

As kids and their parents focus on Halloween fun,
Toxics Information Project (TIP) and other RI
organizations are planning an event designed to
foster better health for all Rhode Islanders.
The Environmental Justice Forum, at Johnson &
Wales University’s Harborside Campus, from
9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include workshops on
The Air We Breathe, The Food We Eat, Where
We Live, Work & Play, and Children’s Health.
Skills Workshops & Planning Next Steps will
round out the day.

Spanish translators will be available throughout
the forum, and a free lunch will be provided for
all who register by November 1. For more
information or to register for the Forum contact
Steven Fischbach, Community Lawyer at Rhode Island
Legal Services - 1-800-662-5034 extension 182 or
by email at steve.fischbach at gmail.com

The Children’s Health Workshop will be led by
TIP Director, Liberty Goodwin, Steve Fischbach,
RI Legal Services, and Arelis Valerio, MD, AE-C,
Pediatric Health Educator. Topics covered:

What Are the Threats to Children’s Health from
Environmental Factors? Why are children more
vulnerable? Children and Asthma - about the
disease and how it can be controlled. Children
and Toxics: - connections to health conditions
such as endocrine disruption, autism & cancer
(and asthma). Why is this an environmental
justice issue?

Action, Options/Strategizing: How can we reduce
the risks to children’s health from the world
around them? Environmental toxins that can affect
children that are within our own control as
consumers - household and personal care products -
require education on risks and alternatives.
Environmental threats that are not by our own
choice require public advocacy - diesel
emissions, toxic waste dumps, unhealthy school
buildings & pesticided playing fields.

Toxic chemicals in toys and baby bottles are
both an advocacy AND consumer issue. Watch
for a major expansion of pertinent articles
and links on the TIP website about this and
other concerns as part of the new Kids & Toxics
Information Exchange project. Some information
is there already - more will be added from
now through 2008.

Workshop & an agenda for the Forum, see:

Rhode Islanders of all incomes, races and
ethnicities deserve to live in safe and healthy
communities. This is an opportunity to learn
what can be done to make homes and neighborhoods
healthier. All who care about the environment,
about justice, their health and the health of
their children should attend this free
Environmental Justice Forum.
