Actually, so do I and I drive a tiny hatchback; I've personally never
witnessed two cars abreast in this space. What invariably happens is that
one car simply stops and waits for the other to go...which, as you point
out, might be the intention here.

Then this one fails. Miserably. The only traffic conceivably slowed here is
that from Dana street. I regularly see cars on Rochambeau and Camp street
whizzing through this intersection with nary a care. I applaud the theory,
but in practice this one evidently hasn't succeeded.
Otherwise if these constructions were intended as smart traffic calming
devices—and not just contractor goofs—then more power to the municipality
for doing something proactive!
