[Summit] Tree planting

I had a massive growing in our side when we moved in 7 years ago.
It took a lot of digging it out and constantly using a weed tool every other week and now every month to nip the stragglers.
 
I am using hostas to crowd it out.  Seems to be the best method - something to replace the available space.

The Japanese knotweed in our next-door neighbor's back yard grows in DEEP shade. It comes back every year.

We can't plant trees along the shoreline across from us because it's public beach land -- you'd have to plant a zillion trees to ever achieve a shady environment there!  That would definitely kill what's left of our property value.

My husband uses a scythe to whack down the knotweed that grows wild right across the road from us (and would block our water view if it grew to full height, which it was when we first moved here -- 10-12 feet tall). Sometimes we're lucky and other plants "move in" while the knotweed is cut down to the soil. But it's a summer-long battle every year.

DEM rules prohibit herbicides (not that I like them, but sometimes, you know...) because this is a coastal watershed zone or something.

It has killed most of the other beach plants including roses, beach peas, etc. by crowding them out, and has taken over grasslands -- those tall beach grasses that anchor the soil in sandy areas. We all hate the knotweed, but you have to respect its adaptability. I guess it's the cockroach of plants.
