Greg,

Thank you for posting this. As a relatively recent RIer (13 years), I didn't know the history of North Main, but suspected something historic based on the unassuming milemarker at about 8th St.

This morning, as I made my way downtown, I saw exactly what you describe: mounds of frozen snow on the sidewalk forcing me to walk in the middle of icy traffic lanes on Doyle, Randall, and Canal. 

Some cities actually have sidewalk plows that clear city sidewalks. I was shocked to discover that more cities don't. Overall, I think it's a disgrace that we're willing to treat our cars better than our living, breathing, walking, biking, or wheelchair-using neighbors.
