The presentation that will be given at the November 18th meeting will
summarize the Technical Review and Approaches Report for Re:Zoning
Providence. If you wish to read the full Technical Report prior to the
meeting, it is available online at
http://rezoningprovidence.com/presentations-reports/. Re:Zoning Providence,
will be a comprehensive overhaul of the City of Providence Zoning
Ordinance. A new zoning ordinance will help us better preserve, strengthen,
and protect the historic pattern of development that is central to the
character of our City, as well as to revitalize and further develop the
areas of our City that can accommodate additional economic growth. Your
input is extremely valuable to us as we prepare to write the first draft of
the new zoning ordinance.****

The Technical Report summarizes the findings of a technical review of the
existing Providence Zoning Ordinance performed by the City’s consultants,
Camiros, from May to July 2013. The purpose of this review is three-fold:
first, the review allows for a more in-depth understanding of the current
development regulations; second, it allows for the identification of
additional issues not identified during meetings and interviews with City
staff and stakeholders; third, it introduces concepts and regulatory
approaches that set direction for substantive revisions to be included in
the new Zoning Ordinance. The objectives and issues outlined within the
report were identified through discussions with staff and stakeholders, and
a review of the Ordinance against zoning best practices. It provides a
broad assessment of current difficulties within the regulations and
preliminary approaches to resolving them.****

>From 2005 to 2012, as part of the comprehensive planning process, an
interim comprehensive plan was created and neighborhood charrettes and
neighborhood plans were completed for each of Providence’s twenty‐five
neighborhoods. In 2012, the comprehensive plan was updated to reflect the
goals of the neighborhood plans. With the City’s comprehensive plan,
Providence Tomorrow, and the neighborhood plans now completed, we have a
better understanding of how development can and will take shape across
Providence, and are able to make strides toward achieving the City’s
overall livability and sustainability goals by updating the Providence
Zoning Ordinance. Each of the neighborhood plans are available on the
City's website at:
http://www.providenceri.com/planning/planning-projects/neighborhood-planning.
The comprehensive plan is available on the City's website at:
