So sorry to hear that. But for others, this is an unfortunate reminder that you absolutely must use password protection on your computers and your mobile phones.
It may seem like an inconvenience to have to type in a password every time you go to use your computer or phone until something like this happens and you realize that thieves now have access to ALL of your information -- bank statements, contact lists, phone numbers, tax returns, web history, photos, email, and anything else that might reside on your computer.
There is only so much you can do to prevent a break-in, but make sure whoever is breaking in only gets the hardware, which is replaceable. It's the financial, personal, and intellectual information that is stored on the computer/phone that makes you very vulnerable and which is irreplaceable.
You might also consider using cloud-based storage as a backup so that you still have access to your documents in case something happens to your computer. Google, Dropbox, and many other companies offer free storage (up to a certain amount). Flickr offers free storage of your photos up to one terabyte.
Finally, if you use Apple products they have built-in services that allow you to geo-locate your phone and computer and to erase the devices remotely if necessary. There are even programs that, when activated by you, take photos through the camera of the perpetrators and email them to you with GPS coordinates. I'm sure there are similar things available for PC's, too.
This might sound like overkill or "Big Brother" until it happens to you. Protect yourself.

> Hi neighbors,
>
> Unfortunately, one of my neighbors on 11th St. had their home burgled yesterday, sometime between 9:15 am and 4:00 pm. The burglar broke a very small window in the basement and used that to enter the home. The burglar took computers and jewelry.

> Please take a look around your home and secure ingress/egress as best you can, and be aware of anything unusual in your area. And please take care.
