Any theories as to why they are stealing cats?

Someone told Andriana, who has been putting up posters for her lost cat
"Baby", that dogfighters look for pets to steal. Getting them from the
pound or shelters is too expensive now. Summer, this person said, is
dogfighting season.

I don't know whether any of this is actually true -- Andriana told me that
a person told her this.

Moreover the pet-stealing people she heard about were masquerading as
pizza-delivery people.

Greetings all,

Yes, I did receive a phone call from a man that said he had interrupted a
pizza delivery man from abducting his cat. This call came in response to
one of the flyers for my missing cat, Baby. He said that the pizza
delivery driver had a collection of pets in crates lining the backseat of
his car. I contacted the police and informed them, but the gentleman that
witnessed the event did not want to come forward.

My Baby was strictly an indoor cat that got outside. She was last seen by
a neighbor sitting on my porch around 6/7pm. She had gotten out a few
times and always stayed on the porch waiting to come back in. This time,
she vanished from my porch and has not returned.

Please watch your animals closely. I have received countless phone calls
from people missing their cats in our immediate area. I have also received
calls from people that reported a dogfighting ring in Pawtucket to the
police. My Baby went missing before Memorial Day weekend and many more
went missing before the July 4th. There are just too many pets missing for
it to be solely a natural occurrence (coyotes, roaming off, etc).
Something else is happening and people seem to becoming more brash with
their efforts - exampled by the family on Woodbine who almost had their
cats stolen from their window.

If you care for your animals the way I do, then please watch your children
closely! We are coming up on Labor Day weekend and I'm guessing that more
pets will vanish.

Andriana

Sandra, do you mean, What do the cat thieves get out of it? They sell the
stolen cats to dogmen for money.

If you have the stomach for it, read the Wikipedia article on dog fighting,
and the section on bait animals -- but it is likely to give you
nightmares. I know I'm going to have some the next few nights after
reading it.

Hi, everyone,
A friend of mine who lives just over the line in Pawtucket has seen a
Himalayan cat in her yard for a few weeks. It's starting to look scruffy
but when she first saw it it looked like someone's very lovely cat had just
gotten out of the house. Is anyone looking for/missing a Himalayan? She
said that this isn't the breed of cat that you would normally see as a
feral cat or regular stray. Please email me and I'll pass the word along.
I'm sending a picture of the cat, a little fuzzy. I'm forwarding the
picture she took.

Hi Folks, sorry to hear of all the bizarre doings and encounters of late.
Weirdness is definitely flying lately, and that is an understatement. Since
there's been talk of our local mentally ill, just wanted to opine that the
guy whose been described on this list as potentially violent does NOT seem
to be our other local schizophrenic, the guy who walks up and down Hope St
several times a day. The guy I'm describing is maybe 5'8", solid build,
brown hair and beard which is often long (it grows out and then gets shorn,
and he can have a Grizzly Adams look at times). This guy has been around
for decades and I've never seen him violent or even seen him engage with
anyone. He often is ranting, sometimes yelling and gesturing wildly, or
sometimes in more of a walking catatonia, but he always (so far) just walks
on by. I don't want people to be scared of him by default though his
behavior is obviously bizarre.

On another note, I hear that Monarch butterfly count in Mexico has tripled
since last year. Hope springs... Ellen on Mayflower.
