Happy holidays to everyone.
I’m forwarding just part of City Councillor Sam Zurier’s newsletter for Easter week (April 16th), concerning a permit application for a new suboxone treatment facility at Lloyd Avenue and Thayer Streets.
He is holding a community meeting to hear various speakers on this question, as well as the mayor’s proposed bond to support municipal infrastructure, for the Monday after tomorrow, April 24th, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Hope High School cafeteria.
¶ The original newsletter (sponsored and paid for by his Second Ward Democratic Committee) also included Mr Zurier’s criticism of the policy and performance of the City Council’s president and current majority (to which neither he nor First Ward [Fox Point] Councillor Seth Yurdin belong, although Third Ward [Summit/Mount Hope] Councillor Kevin Jackson does).
There’s certainly a necessary and beneficial place for such comments in a free, robust and fearless democracy, but as an apolitical, non-partisan neighborhood forum that encompasses a broad range of political opinions and affiliations, and which hasn’t yet taken a position on these city-wide policy or political issues, I wanted to let readers see both sides of these questions. *
So I’ve asked City Council President Luís Aponte (Tenth Ward — Allens Ave. & southwestern waterfront) for a response that I can circulate together with Councillor Zurier’s views. When and if I get the response, I’ll run them both.
* N.B. Wayland Square, unlike almost all its sister neighborhoods, has not yet organized a non-profit or IRC § 501 (c) 3 corporation that must shun politics but can shield its funds and donations from taxes. So there’s no legal inhibition on our taking sides did we wish to (although this might limit things like the number of places we could meet without paying rent). It’s just that historically and in part because we try to hold impartial election-candidate forums, we’ve never decided to do so.
I hope everyone had a nice holiday week,
Dave
